ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Syracuse University ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory against No. 8 Cornell on Tuesday evening. Carrie-Mattimoe scored both goals in the win and has scored a goal for the Orange in two consecutive games. Cornell is the highest ranked opponent the Orange has beaten this season. Syracuse improves its record to 12-8-1, while the Big Red is now 8-5-2 this season.
Cornell's Karlee Overguard scored the only goal in the first 55 minutes of play on an even-strength goal midway through the opening period. In the third period, the Orange found itself down one with the Big Red on a power-play. Two Cornell players collided at the Syracuse blue line, resulting in a loose puck, and Carrie-Mattimoe went end-to-end on a breakaway and took a shot on goal. The initial shot was saved by goaltender Amanda Mazzotta's left leg and rebounded to the back wall. Carrie-Mattimoe banked the shot off Mazzotta's back and deflected into the net with 4:58 remaining to force the overtime. It is the second consecutive game that the Orange has played an extra period.
With less than two minutes remaining in overtime, freshman standout Isabel Menard received a pass from sophomore forward Lisa Mullan in front of the goal. Menard shot from close-range, but Mazzotta made the save and batted the puck in the air. Carrie-Mattimoe swatted the puck down and into the goal, despite Mazzotta's diving effort to save it. Menard's helper extends her point-steak to six consecutive games, which is a career-long. She now has a team-leading 14 assists this season.
Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel turned aside 26-of-27 shots, while Mazzotta had 16 saves. The Big Red outshot the Orange, 27-18, while both teams held the other scoreless on the power-play.
Syracuse travels to Manchester, N.H. to face off against St. Anselm on Friday, January 8 at 4 p.m.
