PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The eighth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team overpowered the Providence College Friars, 3-0, today at the Friar Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. The Orange dominated play, outshooting Friars 16-2, while holding an 8-0 advantage in penalty corners. Syracuse's first shutout of the year improves SU to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the BIG EAST, while PC move to 2-8, 0-2.
Syracuse dominated the first half, outshooting Providence, 7-1, while holding a 2-0 advantage on penalty corners. The Friars, however, managed to keep SU off the board until the Orange broke the scoreless tie with zero time remaining on the first-half clock.
After being awarded a penalty corner All-American Martina Loncarica scored her fifth goal of the season by deflecting in a shot from freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer. It was Geyer's team-best seventh assist of the season.
Junior midfielder Liz McInerney gave the Orange some insurance with her first career goal with 11:05 remaining on the clock. The junior weaved through the Friar defense and beat PC goalkeeper Kathi Weidman low stick side.
Loncarica pushed to score to 3-0 firing home a shot that deflected off a Friar stick into the cage.
Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver made one save in the win. Weidman made six saves in for the Friars.
Syracuse concludes the weekend in Amherst, Mass. for a matchup with rv Massachusetts (4-6) on Sunday, October 3 at 2 p.m.
Notes
Loncarica has recorded a team-best 16 points. She has scored a team-best tying six goals and is third on SU's all-time points list with 104.
Geyer is second on the team with 13 points.
McInerney has registered four points.
