TAMPA, Fla. – Sophomore Rosina Callisto scored her second goal of the season in SU's women's soccer 2-1 loss at South Florida in its season finale. The Orange ends the season with a 6-9-5 overall record and a 3-6-2 mark in BIG EAST play. The Bulls improve to 11-4-3, 6-3-2 in conference action.
South Florida scored both of its goals in the first half. The first came in the 29th minute when Venicia Reid found the back of the net off assists from Angelique and Rehana Murani. The Bulls extended their lead to 2-0 in the 41st minute when Chantelle Goodson scored off assists from Reid and Chelsea Klotz.
The Orange turned on the offensive pressure in the second half, and Callisto cut the lead in half in the 61st minute when she scored an unassisted goal. She finishes the season with a career-best six points. Syracuse continued to create scoring chances, but couldn't covert on its opportunities as South Florida posted the one-goal victory.
“It was a hard-fought game,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “I thought we dominated the second half. They had a few break-away chances, but our back line did a good job absorbing their pressure and Brittany (Anghel) made some big saves as she has done all season. We created scoring opportunities, but we didn't capitalize on our chances. That's what has come back to haunt us in games that we should have won this season. In the BIG EAST, every game is a big game and every score matters.”
South Florida outshot Syracuse, 13-9, and both teams earned three corner kicks. Anghel finished with two saves, giving her 91 this season. That total ranks sixth on Syracuse's single-season record list. Bulls' goalkeeper Nicole McClure made four saves.
In 2010, Syracuse posted six victories, its most wins since the 2007 season. The Orange also recorded its best start in BIG EAST play when it won its first two conference games of the year. Syracuse finished in a tie for sixth place in the American Division standings, just two points shy of a top-five finish which would have given the Orange a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament.
“While our record in 2010 is better than it was last year, it doesn't ease the pain of not making the BIG EAST Tournament,” Wheddon said. “I am disappointed for the players because I believe they deserve to be there. I'm proud of the players and their work rate. They didn't give up at all. They're exceptionally fit and fought for every game. We're a very young team that is only going to get better and better.”
