
Women's Soccer Hands Out Team Awards

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse women's soccer team announced its team awards for the 2010 season at its annual banquet on Sunday, December 12. Freshman Brittany Anghel was named the Player of the Year. Junior Casey Ramirez earned the Defensive MVP award, and sophomore Rosina Callisto was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player.
Anghel recorded 91 saves in her freshman campaign, which is the sixth-highest single-season total in school history. She posted six shutouts on the year, which tie her for fourth on SU's single-season record list. Anghel became the first Syracuse player to earn BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors after posting two consecutive shutouts against Rutgers and Seton Hall. She ranked second in the league in saves and third in save per game (5.06).
Ramirez, who earned the award for the second consecutive season, anchored the Syracuse defense which posted six shutouts this season. She was one of four players to play in every game in 2010. Callisto posted career highs in every statistical category this season, including points (7), goals (2) and assists (3). She tied for the team lead in assists and ranked fourth in scoring. Callisto earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors after helping the Orange open league play with a win against St. John's and a tie at Yale.
The Lucille Verhulst Sportswoman of the Year Award was given to Alyscha Mottershead and the Abbie Bigelow Award for Courage was presented to senior Megan Bellingham. The 'Cuse Challenge Award went to freshman Rachel Blum.
In addition, Bellingham and fellow senior Marjory Elwell were honored, as were team captains Bellingham, Ramirez and Mottershead.
