SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse head men's soccer coach Ian McIntyre announced today that Mike Miller has joined his staff as an assistant coach. Miller comes to Syracuse from the University of Evansville where he was an assistant from 2006-09.
While with the Purple Aces, Miller helped recruit two classes ranked in the top 40 by College Soccer News, including the 23rd-rated class in 2008.
"Mike Miller is an outstanding young coach who has a very big future in the game,” McIntyre said. “He has already assisted in the development of several outstanding goalkeepers and he possesses the passion and drive to inspire our student-athletes here at Syracuse."
In addition to his recruiting responsibilities, Miller trained the Evansville goalkeepers and assisted in opponent scouting. During his tenure there, he mentored goalie Alec Dufty, who signed with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2009 before joining the Columbus Crew. He also coached Phil Boerger, a U.S. youth national team performer and All-Missouri Valley Conference honoree.
Miller's responsibilities weren't limited to the soccer side. He also coordinated team travel, game operations, marketing, and was assistant director of the Aces Soccer Camp. In addition, he served as the director of the Aces Goalkeeper Academy.
While in Evansville, Miller worked as the head coach of the Evansville Soccer Club U-18 and U-16 teams. He was also a member of the Indiana State ODP staff from 2006-08 and served as a national goalkeeper coach for the Super Y League from 2006-07.
Prior to his appointment at Evansville, Miller was an assistant coach at the University of North Florida from 2004-06 and worked as a youth coach for the Clay County Soccer Club in Jacksonville, Fla. for several years. At North Florida, Miller trained goalkeeper Mike Frost, who currently plays professionally in Australia for Sydney United FC.
Miller played his college soccer at Jacksonville University from 1999-2003. A goalkeeper himself, Miller started for two seasons and totaled 84 saves with four shutouts in his collegiate career. He was named to the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASC) All-Tournament Team as a junior and was the ASC Defensive Player of the Week twice. He also played for the PDL Cocoa Expos.
Miller holds several national coaching licenses. In addition, he is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and serves on the group's committee responsible for selecting the national assistant coach of the year.
Miller received a bachelor's degree in physical education from Jacksonville in 2004 and earned a master's degree in public administration from Evansville in 2009.
