SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sixth-ranked Syracuse team gave up an early lead and lost to No. 16 Dartmouth, 17-10, on Wednesday, March 24 at Coyne Field. The Orange goes to 4-3 on the season, while the Big Green improves to 4-1.
Senior Christina Dove recorded five points to lead Syracuse on a team-high three goals and two assists. With the three goals, Dove extended her streak of consecutive games played with a goal to 47, which is tied for the third-longest active streak in the country. Senior Halley Quillinan had one goal and took over sole possession of third place on Syracuse's all-time goals scored list with 172.
Junior Tee Ladouceur found the back of the net 53 seconds into the game and freshman Tegan Brown followed with an unassisted goal to give the Orange a 2-0 lead at the 28:45 mark. Sarah Plumb netted Dartmouth's first goal with 25:39 remaining and sparked the Big Green on a 4-0 scoring run, giving it a 4-2 lead. After the teams traded goals, senior Jackie DePetris cut the lead to one with her first goal of the game, but Dartmouth responded with five consecutive goals to take a 10-4 lead with 5:34 left in the half. Dove halted Dartmouth's scoring run with a goal at the 5:07 mark before DePetris netted the final goal of the half on an assist from Dove to cut the Big Green's lead to 10-6 at halftime.
Dartmouth took control of the game in the second half, outscoring the Orange 7-1 in the first 13:30 minutes to take its largest lead of the game, 17-7. The Orange responded with three consecutive goals as sophomore Sarah Holden, Brown and Dove all found the back of the net to cut the lead to 17-10 with 11:09 remaining, but that was a close as the Orange could get.
“We didn't respond to the challenge,” said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. “They pressured and instead of having composure and responding with energy and hustle and fighting back, we were beaten down a little bit.”
Dartmouth outshot Syracuse, 25-21, and had 15 ground balls to nine for SU. The Big Green also won 17-of-29 draw controls. Greta Meyer had five goals for Dartmouth, and Sarah Parks added four goals and two assists. Orange goalkeeper Liz Hogan (Victor, N.Y.) recorded six saves, while Julie Wadland had seven saves for Dartmouth.
The 16th-ranked Big Green becomes the lowest-ranked team to defeat the Orange since the final game of the 2006 season SU lost to No. 20 Pennsylvania. It also marks the first time Syracuse has lost back-to-back games since the 2006 campaign.
The Orange is back in action on Sunday when it opens BIG EAST play against Rutgers at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Admission is free of charge.
