SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team announced its 2009 team award winners on Friday, April 16. Head coach Ian McIntyre and his staff handed out eight individual honors, among them team MVP, Rookie of the Year and the Golden Boot Award.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ryan Jones earned MVP honors. Jones played in 17 matches with 16 starts and ranked third in the BIG EAST with 74 saves. He made 12 saves early in the season at Colgate, the most of any conference goalie in one game in 2009. Jones was selected as the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on Oct. 5 after recording five second-half saves in a 3-0 shutout of Rutgers.
Freshman midfielder Mark Brode was honored as the 2009 Rookie of the Year after a successful season in which he was one of two Orange players to start every game. Brode finished the year with six points (2g, 2a), which led all SU freshmen and ranked third on the team's scoring list.
The 2009 Golden Boot Award went to Hansen Woodruff. The senior co-captain finished his career fifth at Syracuse in goals per game (.415) and sixth in points per game (1.015). He also ranks ninth on the program's career goal list (27) and is tied for ninth on the school's career scoring list (66 points). Woodruff played in all 18 games with 17 starts in 2009. The team leader in points (15) and goals (6), Woodruff was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Senior Sean Summerville earned the team's Most Improved Player Award. The defender played in 15 games with 10 starts in 2009, after seeing action in only two games during the 2008 season. He was a member of the Orange defense that shut out Rutgers (3-0) on Oct. 2.
The 2009 Coaches' Award was presented to David Neumann. The Coaches' Award recognizes an individual who “best personifies courage, desire, humility and an unselfish devotion to his teammates.” Neumann played in 16 games with 14 starts at outside back.
The Orange Alumni Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest GPA after at least three semesters at Syracuse University. This year's recipient of the award was senior Pete Hill. A team co-captain, Hill was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I Second Team in 2009. He started all 14 games he played on defense and tied for the team lead with three assists.
Freshman Clayton Dubin was the winner of the 2009 Freshman Academic Achievement Award, earning the highest GPA for a first semester player.
Junior Geoff Lytle received the 2009 Dean Foti Award, given to the Syracuse player with the most positive influence on the team's attitude. Lytle played in 16 games with seven starts at midfield and had an assist on SU's first goal of the season at Binghamton.
