SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer program announced its team awards for the 2009 season at its annual banquet on Saturday, April 17. Freshman Tina Romagnuolo was named the Player of the Year as well as the Outstanding Offensive Player. Sophomore Casey Ramirez earned the Outstanding Defensive Player award, and senior Eliza Bennett-Hattan received the Most Outstanding Person award.
Romagnuolo led Syracuse in scoring with 18 points, the fifth-highest total by an SU freshman since the program began in 1996. She led the squad with nine goals, which tie her for sixth on the Orange's single-season record list and for third on the all-time goals scored by a freshman leader list. Three of her goals were game-winners. Romagnuolo earned a spot on both the All-BIG EAST Second Team and the conference's All-Rookie squad.
Ramirez became a defender in 2009 after playing in the midfield as a freshman. She was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Orange to a pair of shutouts on the road at Fordham and Binghamton. Bennett-Hattan ends her career as the school's all-time leader in saves (324) and shutouts (20). In 2009, she posted four shutouts and a 1.45 goals-against average.
The Lucille Verhulst Sportswoman of the Year Award was given to Erin Quinlan, and the Abbie Bigelow Award for Courage was presented to freshman Jenna Rickan.
In addition, seniors Chelsea Berry and Tessa MacDougall and junior Megan Bellingham received Captain's Plaques. The senior class of Berry, Bennett-Hattan, MacDougall and Sami Hirsh were also honored.
