PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Syracuse Orange field hockey team dominated the BIG EAST preseason awards released by the conference on Friday, Aug. 13. Two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad was named the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and the Orange placed five on the preseason all-conference team, the most of any school.
Conrad, a senior forward, ranked second in the BIG EAST last year with 43 points. She totaled 17 goals and nine assists. Entering her final season, Conrad is currently second on the school's career points list (94) and fourth in team history with 38 goals.
In addition to being tabbed the preseason offensive player of the year, Conrad was a unanimous choice to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team. She was joined on the 13-person squad by senior back Maggie Befort, sophomore back Amy Kee, junior midfielder Martina Loncarica and sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver. Like Conrad, Befort and Loncarica were unanimous selections.
Befort is the Orange's all-time leading scorer with 105 points, including 29 last season. Loncarica paced Syracuse with 17 assists a year ago, while Kee ranked second on the team with 34 points, including 12 goals. Stiver was a stalwart in net, making 49 saves and posting two shutouts. She ranked second in the BIG EAST in 2009 with a 1.29 goals-against average.
"It's great for those five kids," said head coach Ange Bradley. "They're great representatives of Syracuse and it says a lot about what we've been able to accomplish here the last three years, but there's still work to do."
In addition to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team, the conference also released the results of the BIG EAST Preseason Poll Friday. Syracuse (32 points) was picked to finish second, one point behind league favorite Connecticut (33 points). The Huskies received four of the seven first-place votes. The Orange garnered two. Louisville (28 points), which was picked to finish third, received the other.
Providence (18 points), Villanova (17 points), Rutgers (13 points) and Georgetown (6 points) rounded out the poll.
The BIG EAST Preseason Poll and all-conference team were based on the voting results of the league's seven head coaches who are not permitted to vote for their own players.
Syracuse, the defending BIG EAST regular-season champion, will open the 2010 season at home on Friday, Aug. 27 against Northwestern. Start time is 2 p.m. at Coyne Stadium.
