OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Syracuse senior goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo is one of 30 candidates from around the country for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in the men's soccer division. The award is presented annually to an NCAA Division I men's senior soccer player who excels both on and off the field.
Candidates were selected based on personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete. While on-the-field performance during their collegiate careers is a factor in determining candidates and the eventual winner, their personal character and off-the-field achievements in the classroom and community are major areas of focus.
Vuolo recorded 18 shutouts in three seasons at Hartwick before joining the Orange for the upcoming 2010 season. He has more than 200 career saves and was selected as the 2009 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Goalkeeper of the Year. Vuolo ranked second in the conference with 74 saves a season ago and was named Hartwick's team MVP.
Off the field, Vuolo earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Hartwick in 2010. He is enrolled in the MBA program in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse. While at Hartwick, Vuolo formed the school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes subdivision. Under his direction, the group organized several community service events, including the first annual “Hartwick Hill Race” to benefit the Family Resource Network. The event raised more than $3,500 to assist special needs children.
From the list of 30 nominees, 10 finalists will be selected midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplify excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The winner will be announced in December at the 2010 NCAA Men's College Cup in Santa Barbara, Calif.
CLASS is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School and the program was launched during the 2001-02 season in response to the trend of college basketball players leaving early to turn professional. The award was conceived by sportscaster Dick Enberg and was inspired by the story of former Duke star Shane Battier, who could have been an NBA lottery pick, but elected to return to college where he led the Blue Devils to the national championship and earned his degree.
