NORFOLK, Va. – Junior forward Heather Susek scored twice as the ninth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team defeated No. 17 Old Dominion this afternoon at the Powhatan Sports Complex. Freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer scored SU's other goal as the Orange moved to 4-1 on the season.
“We competed and played very hard today. It was a good game with good competition,” head coach Ange Bradley said. “We were the second game of the day so, we had to deal with a delayed start, but we were able to overcome and play Syracuse field hockey.”
Geyer got Syracuse on the board first when she blasted a shot from 10 yards out that beat ODU goalkeeper Marla Petriello. It was Geyer's second goal and team-best eighth point of the season.
The Lady Monarchs responded before halftime as Loran Hatch had her initial shot off a penalty corner blocked, but she recovered the loose ball and her ensuing shot found the back of the cage to tie the game at 1-1 entering the intermission.
Less than a minute into the second half, Susek tallied her first goal of the day and second of the year. The junior collected a rebounded off a Petriello save and her put-back gave the Orange a 2-1 advantage.
Syracuse increased its lead 10 minutes later when Susek took advantage of another rebound opportunity and posted her second goal of the afternoon. Susek's three goals this season are tied for most on the squad with two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad.
The Orange defense took over from that point as ODU was only able to muster three shots in the second half.
SU outshot ODU, 19-10, but the Lady Monarchs held a slim 5-4 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver made three saves for the Orange.
Syracuse will now play third-ranked Virginia, which defeated No. 12 Ohio State at noon at Powhatan Sports Complex.
