NORFOLK, Va. – The ninth ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey team lost an overtime thriller, 2-1, to undefeated third ranked Virginia today in Norfolk, Va. Syracuse, which is 1-2 in overtime contests, moves to 4-2 overall, while the Cavaliers advance to 6-0.
All-American midfielder Martina Loncarica gave SU the early 1-0 lead 31:45 into the game off an Orange penalty corner. Virginia's Tara Puffenberger responded less than three minutes later, knotting the game 1-1 going into the half. The lone goal of the game for Syracuse was Loncarica's second of the season. Sophomore back Amy Kee provided the assist on the play. It was Kee's second assist of the year.
Orange goal keeper, sophomore Leann Stiver, played a key role in keeping the Cavaliers scoreless in the second half as she recorded six of her total eight saves. The two top-10 teams were still tied 1-1 as they headed into overtime. In the first overtime period, UVA's Elly Buckley weaved through traffic and beat Stiver to secure the win for Virginia.
The Orange took a total of 11 shots in regulation, including seven in the second half, but could not find the back of the net.
The Orange will have the entire week to refocus its charge before heading to Piscataway, N.J. to face BIG EAST opponent Rutgers on Saturday, September 18.
