
Orange Wins BIG EAST Opener

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Five different players scored goals as the eighth Syracuse Orange field hockey team punished the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 5-1, Saturday at the Bauer Track & Field Complex. The contest was the BIG EAST opener for both teams.
The Orange (5-1, 1-0) registered 16 shots on the afternoon while the Scarlet Knights (1-6, 0-1) only managed two attempts.
SU struck first in a play originating off a penalty corner. After All-American Martina Loncarica delivered the entry off the corner, she snuck into the left side of the cage to accept a pass from senior back Maggie Befort for the first score at the 19:04 mark.
Syracuse pushed ahead, 2-0, six minutes later on a penalty corner tally from Befort. Loncarica once again provided the push and junior midfield Liz McInerney the stop on Befort's blast.
Rutgers pulled within a goal at the close of the first half when Carlie Rouh dribbled past a pair of Orange defenders and fired into the cage as the horn sounded.
SU kicked it into another level and rattled off three scores in the second stanza. A high-stick tap from sophomore forward Kelsey Millman resulted in her first goal of the year. Junior forward Heather Susek was credited with the assist.
Two-Time All-American Lindsey Conrad and Susek added goals to put the final score at 5-1.
Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver recorded the win for the Orange.
SU remains in the Garden State for a pivotal regional matchup with No. 4 Princeton tomorrow at Class of '52 Stadium in Princeton, N.J.
Notes
Susek recorded her team-best tying fourth goal and team-high 11th point.
Loncarica registered her third goal and third assist and now has nine points.
Conrad scored her fourth goal and now has eight points.
Befort tallied her second goal and third assist and now eight points.
McInerney's assist was her first career point.
