SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer program will welcome back one of the most successful teams in school history on Saturday, Sept. 25. Members of SU's 1985 BIG EAST Championship team will be on hand to celebrate the 25th anniversary of that glorious season when the Orange hosts Pittsburgh at 6 p.m. in its BIG EAST opener.
The 1985 team will be introduced and recognized for their achievement at the SU Soccer Stadium prior to kickoff against the Panthers.
Led by first-year head coach Tim Hankinson, Syracuse won its second conference tournament title in four years in 1985. The Orange went 12-6-4 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play. In the BIG EAST Tournament, Syracuse did not allow a goal, defeating Pittsburgh (2-0) in the semifinals before outlasting Connecticut (1-0) in the title game.
The 1985 roster was filled with some of the greatest players in school history. Ken Vieira (31 points), Mark DiMonte (18 points) and Greg Kolodziey (12 points) were the team's top three scorers. DiMonte and Kolodziey are two of the six players in Orange history to score at least 30 goals, and Vieira finished his career with 28 goals, 14 of which came during the 1985 campaign.
Defensively, Rick Fatscher manned the goal area. He made 119 saves and set the school record for saves per game (8.5). He still ranks second in the Syracuse record book with 367 career saves.
Other 1985 standouts included Jim Garrant, Saied Nikkhah and Scott Owsiany.
A postgame reception for Syracuse soccer alums is also planned. Former players interested in being part of the festivities should click here to register or contact assistant coach Mike Miller at mbmill04@syr.edu for more information.
