PRINCETON, N.J. – Princeton's Michelle Cesan scored with 1:10 left on the clock to give the fourth-ranked Princeton Tigers (5-0) field hockey team to a 1-0 victory against the eighth-ranked Syracuse Orange (5-3) on Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium.
The two squads played a scoreless first half that saw Syracuse outshoot Princeton, 7-6, despite being outcornered, 8-6. Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver stopped Kathleen Sharkey on a pair of penalty corner chances, with Tiger keeper Christina Maida made two saves in a short span on senior back Maggie Befort and All-American Martina Loncarica, also both on corner chances.
The two teams played an even second half, with Princeton starting strong in the early minutes. Play opened up in the final 10 minutes with six shots on goal recorded.
An Orange turnover game the ball to Princeton's Amanda Bird, who fed Cesan just outside of the circle. Cesan entered the arc and took a hard low shot that beat Stiver and gave the Tigers the win.
Both teams tallied 13 shots with Princeton gaining 11 corners to Syracuse's nine. Stiver made seven saves in the loss while Maida made six in the win.
The Orange hosts BIG EAST foe No. 12 Louisville Cardinals at J.S. Coyne Stadium on Saturday, September 25 at noon.
