PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Syracuse sophomore Rosina Callisto has been named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Orange extend its unbeaten streak to four games. She had a goal, the first of her career, and an assist in the two games last week. It is Callisto's first conference weekly honor of her career.
It marks the first time a Syracuse player has earned the Offensive Player of the Week award since the 1999 season when Jenna Szyluk was the co-Offensive Player of the Week. The Orange had two Players of the Week last season. Junior Casey Ramirez earned the Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 27, while sophomore Tina Romagnuolo was the Rookie of the Week on Oct. 25.
Callisto scored her first career goal in Syracuse's 1-0 victory against St. John's. She intercepted a pass from the Red Storm's goalkeeper, who was trying to clear the ball out of its defensive end, 10 yards outside the box. Callisto made a move around a St. John's defender and put her shot in the back of the net. Her goal gave Syracuse its first win in its BIG EAST opener since the 2005 season.
Against Yale, Callisto was credited with an assist on Patricia Linds' (Stockholm, Sweden) goal. Callisto took a shot that hit the inside of the post and rolled across the goal line to Lind, who tapped the ball into the net to tie the score, 1-1, in the 82nd minute of play. The game stayed tied through the remainder of regulation and two overtime periods as Syracuse remained unbeaten in its last four games.
Callisto ranks fourth on the team in scoring with five points and is tied for the team lead in assists with three.
The Orange returns to BIG EAST play on Thursday at Providence at 4 p.m. before returning home to host Connecticut on Sunday at 1 p.m.
