ITHACA, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team (1-4-0) concludes a five-match road trip on Wednesday, Sept. 22 when it visits Cornell (3-2-1) for a 7 p.m. match at Berman Field. The Orange is looking to rebound from consecutive losses, while the Big Red have won two straight.
A FAMILIAR FACE ON THE CORNELL SIDELINE
Second-year Cornell head coach Jaro Zawislan is someone very familiar with the Syracuse program. Zawislan served as SU's assistant coach from 2002 to 2008 before accepting the head coaching position at Cornell in July of 2009. While with the Orange, Zawislan tutored the goalies and was an integral part of the Orange's recruiting success, helping bring previous standouts like Richard Asante, Kyle Hall and Robert Cavicchia to Syracuse. Zawislan is 9-8-6 overall at Cornell, including a 6-6-5 record in his first season.
ORANGE REWIND
The Orange lost its first-ever meeting with American, 2-1, on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Reeves Field. The Eagles got a pair of early goals and held off the Orange the rest of the way. Junior Nick Roydhouse got Syracuse on the board with a penalty-kick goal at 45:37 to produce the final score.
INSTANT OFFENSE
Roydhouse's goal at American was his team-leading second of the year. His two goals in 2010 already equals his career goals total in 36 matches coming into this season.
BIBBS MAKING MARK
Sophomore Nick Bibbs has worked his way into the Syracuse starting lineup in a defensive midfield role. Bibbs has started the team's last three games. A transfer from Caldwell College in New Jersey, Bibbs started 15 games in 2009 before coming to Syracuse. In high school, he helped lead Lower Merion to three consecutive Central League titles.
SCOUTING CORNELL
The Big Red is 3-2-1 thus far in 2010 with wins against Hartwick (3-2), St. Joseph's (3-1) and, most recently, Canisius (1-0). Franck Onambele and Chase Aaronson lead the Big Red offense with two goals apiece, while Jimmy Lannon and Craig Dimbleby each have two assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Rick Pflasterer, a 2009 honorable mention All-Ivy League selection, has started all six games for the Big Red and has 22 saves. He registered his first clean sheet of the season against Canisius on Sept. 19.
THE SERIES WITH CORNELL
The Orange has a long history with the Big Red, meeting for the first time in 1921. Cornell owns a 25-34-6 advantage in the series, but the Orange has gotten the better of the Big Red recently. Syracuse has won the last five meetings, including a 2-1 decision in 2009. Former SU standout Hansen Woodruff netted both goals in the contest. The Orange's last visit to Berman Field was in 2004 and it produced a 2-1 SU victory.
ORANGE AGAINST THE IVY LEAGUE
The Orange is 29-43-7 all-time against the eight members of the Ivy League (0-3-0 vs. Columbia; 25-34-6 vs. Cornell; 3-3-0 vs. Dartmouth; 0-1-1 vs. Harvard; 0-1-0 vs. Penn; 1-1-0 vs. Yale). The Orange has never faced Brown or Princeton.
