UNBEATEN IN LAST TWO
After starting the season 1-4-0, Syracuse is unbeaten in its last two outings. The Orange tied Cornell, 1-1, on Sept. 22 and opened BIG EAST play with a 0-0 draw at home against Pittsburgh on Sept. 25. The Orange's shutout of the Panthers was the team's second clean sheet of the season.
DEFENSE IMPROVING
Syracuse allowed just one goal in 220 minutes of action last week against Cornell and Pittsburgh. The performance decreased the Orange's goals-against average from 1.94 through five games to 1.43. SU's two shutouts (vs. Northeastern, vs. Pittsburgh) is already one more than the team had in 18 outings a year ago (1). In its two games last week, the Orange registered a 0.40 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage.
VUOLO SECOND IN THE BIG EAST IN SAVES
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo is currently second in the BIG EAST with 34 saves. He's also fourth in the conference in saves per game at 4.86. The Downingtown, Pa. native recorded 18 saves last week against Cornell and Pittsburgh (9.0 saves per game). He stopped a career-best nine shots against the Big Red and equaled that total with nine saves against Pittsburgh to earn his first shutout of the season.
SCOUTING CANISIUS
The Golden Griffins are still searching for their first victory of the season. Canisius is 0-5-0 and has been shut out in four of its five outings, including a 2-0 loss to Robert Morris on Sept. 26. For the season, the Golden Griffins have been outscored, 12-1. Andrew Incho has the team's only goal, a strike in the 76th minute of a 3-1 loss at Delaware on Sept. 3. Sam Zarka is the only other Golden Griffin with a point, assisting on Incho's goal against the Fightin' Blue Hens.
Canisius has struggled defensively. The club is allowing 2.4 goals per game and goalkeeper Kareem Gray owns a save percentage of just .645 with 20 saves.
Syracuse native Jim Hesch is in his 10th season at the helm of the Golden Griffins. He holds a career record of 48-106-16 and is the winningest coach in school history. Hesch played collegiately at Southern Connecticut State and Cortland State. He was a member of Southern Connecticut State's 1990 national championship team before joining the Red Dragons.
THE SERIES WITH CANISIUS
The Orange leads the all-time series with Canisius, 8-0. Five of those victories have been shutouts ('85, '86, '88, '89, '08). Syracuse has outscored the Golden Griffins 46-4 in the eight contests. In the first match between the two schools in 1984, SU set a team record with 16 goals and defeated the Golden Griffins, 16-1. The most recent meeting between the two clubs was SU's 2008 season opener, a game won by the Orange, 3-0, at the SU Soccer Stadium.
