COLUMBUS, OHIO – The eighth-ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey squad passed its first tough test of the 2010 season with its 2-1 overtime win at No. 14 Ohio State this afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field. For the second consecutive contest the Orange was led by its seniors. Maggie Befort and Two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad provided the scores for the 'Cuse who are now 3-0 for the fourth consecutive year. Freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer recorded her team-best fourth assist of the year and sophomore back Amy Kee registered her first.
“I think Ohio State was a very strong opponent,” said head coach Ange Bradley. “When it came down to it our seniors pulled us through. They have been in the fight before and they know what it takes to get the result we want.”
Emotions ran high during the game's first 30 minutes as pregame ceremony officially opening Buckeye Varsity Field gave Ohio State energy from the start.
Both teams could not find the back of the cage however, and the Orange drew first blood, scoring off its fourth penalty corner of the game, 1:06 into the second half. Senior back Befort tipped home a shot from Geyer to give SU a 1-0 advantage.
The Buckeyes tied the game about 10 minutes later off their second penalty corner of the contest. Berta Queralt provided the push and Aisling McKeon the stop as Aisling Coye found the back of the cage for the equalizer.
The two squads remained scoreless for the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime for the second consecutive season.
The Orange speed was evident during the seven-on-seven sudden death overtime session. SU outshot OSU, 7-1, and tallied four penalty corners to Ohio State's one during the extra session.
Syracuse domination finally paid off as Conrad found the back of the cage 10:17 into overtime to give the cardiac 'Cuse the 2-1 victory. The senior deflected a blast by Kee off SU's ninth penalty corner of the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver registered five saves for Syracuse. The Orange held a 19-11 advantage in shots and a 9-5 edge in penalty corners.
The Orange remains in Columbus for a contest against Kent State tomorrow at 2 p.m.
