COLUMBUS, Ohio – The eighth ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey team suffered its first defeat of the 2010 campaign, losing to Kent State, 2-1, in overtime today at Ohio State's Buckeye Varsity Field. Syracuse, which suffer its first lost to a non-ranked team since October 25, 2007 (52 games ago) moved to 3-1, while Kent State improved to 2-1.
“We dominated the first half, but a game is comprised of 70 minutes not 35,” said head coach Ange Bradley. “Kent State had the perseverance and desire to get the result. We let down as a team and that is something that just cannot happen.”
Sophomore back Amy Kee gave SU a 1-0 lead 19:55 into the game. Kee lifted her penalty corner shot from the top of the arc up into the cage. All-American Martina Loncarica provided the stop on the play. It was Kee's second goal of the season. It was also Loncarica's second assist of the year.
Kent State's Carl Johl evened the score, 1-1, less than three minutes later on Kent State's first penalty corner of the afternoon. Johl deflected in a ball from the right side off a shot from Rachel Miller.
The Orange took a total of 21 shots and 14 penalty corners in regulation, but could not manage another goal.
Time ran out on Syracuse just 5:14 into overtime as Kent State's Debbie Bell flicked in a pass Miller while crossing in front of sophomore goal keeper Leann Stiver.
Stiver recorded four saves for the Orange. Caroline Suitch registered 11 saves, 10 in the first half, for the Golden Flashes.
The path does not get easier for Syracuse with games at No. 16 Old Dominion on Saturday, September 11 and against No. 3 Virginia on Sunday, September 12.
