SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange junior Sami Bin helped lead the Brazilian soccer team to the gold medal at the 2010 Maccabi Australia International Games in Sydney during winter break. For the tournament, Bin was the team's second-leading scorer with four goals and five assists.
Brazil finished with a 4-1-1 record and defeated the United States in the final, 3-0. Bin had a hand in two of Brazil's three goals against the Americans, scoring one and assisting on another.
“It was a great experience,” Bin said of representing his country at the Games. “It was fun to see my friends from Brazil and play with them again. After we won the gold, to celebrate on the field with the whole Brazilian delegation was a thrill.”
A transfer from Montreat College in North Carolina, Bin earned All-Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) honors twice before coming to Syracuse last fall.
Held from Dec. 26, 2010 to Jan. 2, 2011, the Maccabi Games offered competition in a variety of sports such as basketball, soccer and tennis. The Games are similar to the Olympics and are exclusively for athletes of the Jewish faith.
