SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's basketball team celebrates the open of the 2011-12 campaign at Midnight Madness on Friday, Oct. 14. Prior to taking part in the festivities in front of packed house at the Carrier Dome, the coaches and student-athletes took part in the Orange's annual media day at the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center.
Syracuse advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT last season and finished the season with a 25-10 record. It marked the second consecutive season that the Orange has won 25 games, matching a program high. SU also won more than one postseason game for the second straight year.
“Obviously, winning 25 games in the last two years was very good for us, but we understand what the goal is. The goal is to be in the NCAA Tournament and move forward in that tournament,” said sixth-year head coach Quentin Hillsman. “I think we have done a good job of mastering the NIT. We played pretty good in the NIT. We want to move forward and do the same thing in the NCAA Tournament.”
Hillsman welcomes back 10 players, including three starters, giving SU 80.4 percent of its scoring and 88.8 percent of its rebounding back from last season. Leading the way for the Orange is All-BIG EAST First Team honoree Kayla Alexander. The junior center led the team in points (14.8), blocks (2.6), field-goal percentage (.549) and free throw percentage (.766). Her 91 blocks set an SU single-season record. Also returning for her senior season is Iasia Hemingway, an All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention Team member in 2010-11. The forward led the Orange in rebounds (7.4) and placed second in points (12.7) and assists (2.5). She posted a team-high nine double-doubles.
The Orange also returns juniors Elashier Hall and Carmen Tyson-Thomas#, as well as seven additional letterwinners from last season. Syracuse welcomes three newcomers.
Syracuse officially opens the season on Sunday, Nov. 13 when it hosts Long Beach State at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
