Jamie Lee Rattray's goal with 2:19 remaining in regulation was the difference as Clarkson defeated the Syracuse ice hockey team (2-3-0) on opening night at Tennity Ice Pavilion, 3-2 on Friday. Margot Scharfe and Kaillie Goodnough scored goals for the Orange, while Gabrielle Kosziwka scored twice for the Golden Knights (2-1-2). SU will travel to Potsdam to complete the home-and-home set with Clarkson tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m.

Syracuse held a significant 36-19 edge in shots, including a 14-4 advantage in the third period. While neither team could capitalize on the power play (Clarkson: 0-of-5, Syracuse: 0-of-4), the Orange won 35-of-59 draws.

SU struck first midway through the first period as Scharfe scored her first goal of the season when she buried a rebound off of a Megan Skelly shot, extending the senior co-captain's point-streak to three games.

The Golden Knights, who hit three posts in the opening period, would knot the score at one just six minutes later as Kosziwka gathered a loose puck following a blocked shot from Hailey Wood, and snuck a shot past SU goaltender Kallie Billadeau (16 saves).

The score remained that way until the seven-minute mark of the third period when Kosziwka tallied her second of the night when she beat Billadeau with a wrist shot off a feed from Vanessa Gagnon.

Syracuse would make the score 2-2 with six minutes left in regulation as Goodnough potted her first collegiate tally. Goodnough, who collected the puck at the point, blasted a shot that found its way through traffic and past Clarkson goaltender Erica Howe (34 saves.)

The lead was short-lived, however, as Rattray gave the Golden Knights the lead for good with less than three minutes left in the third period when he received a pass from Brittany Styner and got Billadeau to commit to the left before sneaking the puck around her pad and into the net.
