Following a four-game road trip to start the season, the Syracuse hockey team (2-2-0) returns to Tennity Ice Pavilion for the Orange's home-opener against Clarkson on Friday night (7:00 p.m.). Friday's game is the beginning of a home-and-home set with the Golden Knights. SU will travel to Cheel Arena for a Saturday afternoon tilt at 3:30 p.m.
Live stats for both games this weekend will be available on suathletics.com, while Friday's game will be broadcast live through America One. The CHA and America One announced a partnership on August 9 that will stream every SU home game as well as each conference game this season.
Storylines Vs. Clarkson
SU faces Clarkson for the third and fourth time ever this weekend, with the all-time series tied 1-1-0. The teams met twice last year, with Clarkson taking the first game 3-2 before the Orange responded with a 3-1 win at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights are currently receiving votes in both the USCHO.com Poll and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. Leading the attack for Clarkson early in the season is sophomore forward Jamie Lee Rattray, who has a goal and eight assists. Rattray leads the nation with two assists per game, and is tied for 10th in the country with 2.25 points per game. Junior Danielle Skirrow trails close behind with three goals and three assists. Erica Howe has played every minute in goal for the Golden Knights in 2011-12, posting a 2.88 goals against average and .886 save percentage.
Syracuse, which spends an average of 12 minutes in the penalty box per game, will need to stay disciplined against Clarkson, which boasts the nation's fourth-best power play at 29.2% (7-of-24). SU is 12-11-3 all-time against ECAC foes.
Last Time Out: SU Drops Game At Northeastern, Defeats New Hampshire
Syracuse continued its four-game road trip with stops at Matthews Arena on Friday against Northeastern and the Whittemore Center on Saturday against New Hampshire
Friday saw the Orange receive power play goals from Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and Megan Skelly, but it wasn't enough as the Huskies skated to a 5-2 victory. Jenesica Drinkwater made 23 saves in goal for SU.
Syracuse salvaged a split of the weekend series on Saturday as two freshmen scored goals to lead the Orange. Julie Knerr scored in the second period before Casey Hirsch tallied the game-winner with 15:50 left in regulation. Kallie Billadeau made 32 stops for SU en route to her first CHA Goalie of the Week nod.
Up Next: Colgate
Following this weekend's home-and-home series with Clarkson, the Orange will begin a five-game home stand against Colgate in a rare Wednesday night contest at 7:00 p.m. SU will make the return trip to Hamilton, N.Y. on January 2. Colgate leads the all-time series with Syracuse 3-1-1. Last season, the Orange earned a 4-3 win on the road before skating to a 4-4 tie with the Raiders at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Freshmen Getting Into The Scoring Column
Syracuse ice hockey has seven new faces on its roster this season: Jordyn Burns, Shiann Darkangelo, Nicole Ferrara, Kaillie Goodnough, Casey Hirsch, Julie Knerr and Allie LaCombe join SU as freshmen this year. The newcomers include five forwards (Dankangelo, Ferrara, Hirsch, Knerr and LaCombe) and two defensemen (Burns and Goodnough), and will look to replace the seven letterwinners lost from the 2010-11 season.
All seven of Syracuse's freshmen have played in each game this season. The rookie class leads the team in scoring with two goals and five assists.
Metcalfe Approaches 100-Game Milestone
Lisa Mullan and Julie Rising became the first ice hockey student-athletes to reach the 100-game plateau in the team's final game last season.
Senior co-captain Megan Skelly joined her former teammates in the season opener against St. Cloud State when she played in her 100th career contest. Taylor Metcalfe, who has dressed for 98 career games through three seasons with the Orange, is next on the list for SU.
SU Picked To Finish Second In CHA Preseason Poll
Syracuse, last season's runner-up in the College Hockey America Tournament, has been tabbed to finish in a tie for second in this year's CHA Preseason Coaches' Poll. Mercyhurst, last year's tournament champion and NCAA Tournament participant, collected nine points and three first place votes to claim the top spot.
The Orange is picked to finish tie with Niagara for second in the conference, while Robert Morris is predicted to finish fourth.
