SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After Kelsey Millman tied the Syracuse school record with four goals in a game on Friday, sophomore Leonie Geyer matched Millman with four goals of her own to lead SU (12-2) past Vermont on Sunday at J.S. Coyne Stadium, 12-0. The Orange had six players tally goals on the day, including Heather Susek (3), Jordan Page (2), Laura Hahnefeldt (1), Martina Loncarica (1) and Millman (1), while Loncarica tied a school record with three assists.
The Orange, which clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament following Friday's win against Georgetown, jumped out to a 4-0 lead at halftime before exploding for eight goals in the final 35 minutes. SU also held 42-3 shot advantage versus Vermont and a 18-1 edge in penalty corners.
Sunday's win extends the Syracuse winning streak to ten games, including 26 straight wins at J.S. Coyne Stadium dating back to the 2008 season.
Hahnefeldt got things started for the Orange early in the first half with her first collegiate goal just 7:36 into the game on a shot from the right side that beat UVM goalkeeper Stephanie Zygmunt (13 saves) by the near post.
Susek scored her first of the afternoon six minutes later when she potted her 13th goal of the year on an individual effort with a shot into the left corner. Geyer followed that up with a shot from a similar angle two minutes after the Susek tally.
Loncarica notched her first goal in five games with a deflection into the top of the cage midway through the first half on a centering feed from Geyer.
Syracuse, which began the second half by inserting junior defender Iona Holloway as the kicking back, opened the flood gates early in the half as Millman picked up her 14th of the season and fifth of the weekend on a shot into the right corner following a pass from Page. Page then got into the scoring column when she buried a rebound off a Lauren Brooks shot for her third goal of the season 1:30 after the Millman goal.
Following two goals from Geyer off penalty corners, Susek hammered home a rebound with 10:59 left in regulation. Geyer then tied the school record with a clean goal off a corner, which was stopped by Loncarica. Page closed the scoring with 4:35 left in the half with a shot into the right corner on backup goalkeeper Lindsay Whittaker.
SU will hit the road for two tough games against nationally ranked opponents next weekend. The Orange will take on No. 11 Boston College in Chestnut Hill on Friday (7:00 p.m.) before a BIG EAST matchup on Sunday with No. 4 Connecticut (12:00 p.m.).
