With its seven-game home stand in the rearview mirror, the sixth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team (13-2, 4-0) heads back out on the road this weekend for a matchup with two nationally ranked opponents.
The Orange will travel to Chestnut Hill on Friday to square off with No. 12 Boston College at 7:00 p.m., and then make the trip to BIG EAST rival No. 4 Connecticut on Sunday. With a win over UConn, the Orange would take control of first place in the BIG EAST standings. SU has won its last ten games, and is coming off a record-breaking weekend with wins against Georgetown and Vermont last weekend.
Back To The Playoffs
Syracuse clinched a spot in the 2011 BIG EAST Championship Tournament last weekend with its win against Georgetown. This will be the fifth straight season that the Orange has made an appearance in the conference tournament.
The tournament, which is scheduled for November 4-6, will take place at the home of the Orange, J.S. Coyne Stadium. 2011 will mark the sixth time that SU has hosted the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, and the first time since 2007. SU has won two of the past three conference tournaments, including the 2010 Championship with a 1-0 win against UConn.
Shut Down Defense
The Syracuse defense has allowed just seven shots in the last two games. The Orange have allowed eight shots on goal or less in 12 of the team's 15 games this season, and have recorded seven shutouts. Syracuse is ranked fourth in the country with a 0.86 goals against average. Goalkeeper Leean Stiver is 25th in the nation in save percentage (.745) and fifth in goals against average (0.91).
SU Among The Nation's Best
With 23 goals, 78 shots, and only one goal allowed last weekend, Syracuse has catapulted near the top of the national statistics rankings. Leann Stiver is ranked in the top-five in goals against average and top twenty-five in save percentage among active Division I student-athletes (see next page). BIG EAST and ECAC Offensive Player of the Week Kelsey Millman is tied for 11th in assists per game (.87) and 10th in points per game (2.73). The Orange are tied for fourth in the country with 0.46 shutouts per game (six this season), including three in the past five games. SU is also ranked in the top-five in goals against average (4) and top-ten in scoring margin (3).
Series Notes With Boston College
Syracuse and Boston College will meet for the 26th time on Friday. The teams first met in 1988, where the Orange shut out the Eagles 1-0. SU leads the all-time series 16-8.
The Eagles boast a 5-4 all-time advantage against the Orange in Chestnut Hill. In last year's game, Amy Kee, Iona Holloway, and Martina Loncarica scored goals for SU en route to a 3-2 win.
