SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 5 Syracuse field hockey team completed a weekend sweep on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 shutout victory against Massachusetts (2-8) at J.S Coyne Stadium. Heather Susek and Amy Kee scored goals for the Orange (9-2), while Leean Stiver made one save in goal. SU will host No. 17 Albany on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
Sunday's win extends SU's winning streak to six games, as well as the home winning streak to 22 games, dating back to early in the 2008 season. The Orange have five home games remaining at Coyne.
Syracuse held a significant advantage in all statistical categories for the second straight game, outshooting the Minutewomen 23-2 as the Orange defense limited UMass' chances in the circle. The Orange also had 14 penalty corners to Massachusetts' two.
Susek gave SU a 1-0 lead 8:25 into the game with her eighth goal of the season when she took a feed from Kelsey Millman and fired a low shot from just inside the circle that beat UMass goalkeeper Alesha Widdall (eight saves) to the right.
SU, which held a 15-0 edge in shots during the first half, continued to maintain ball possession in the second half. Kee gave the Orange a 2-0 lead with 14:26 remaining in regulation when she buried a shot after Liz McInerney stopped the ball from a penalty corner entrance by Millman to give Syracuse the lead for good.
