On The Turf With Erika Wachter

Another week has flown by; unfortunately this past weekend had its share of highs and lows. On Thursday afternoon, we left for Boston, one of our favorite cities. However, on this trip, we didn't have time to explore the city. With one game in Boston and another one in Connecticut less than 48 hours later, time was of the essence.
After a long bus ride, we arrived in Boston and headed for practice. We looked good during practice and were ready for our primetime matchup Friday night. We ate Panera Bread and then went to the hotel for some much needed sleep.
On Friday, we did our usual walk-thru and installed final game preparations. Playing a former BIG EAST team in No. 12 Boston College, we knew the game against our future ACC rival was going to be a dog-fight. And, that's exactly what it proved to be, as we came out on top thanks to an exciting goal by Leonie Geyer in overtime.
After celebrating our victory together on the field, we prepared to head back to the hotel for some pizza and a good night's rest. It was a fairly late by the time we got settled in, but before bed, we needed to make sure our bodies were rejuvenated for our next game. We got into the pool with some lovely ice and regenerated our bodies. The next morning, we woke up, ate a delicious scrumptious breakfast buffet at the hotel, and then Leann Stiver showed off her bambi legs and led the team a yoga session.
After our thorough stretch, we were on the road again, this time to Connecticut. With a win over UConn, we would clinch the title of BIG EAST Regular Season champions for the fourth time in as many years. We arrived, and then headed out for practice. After another strong showing, we ate a few more times and then relaxed in our rooms. Some watched TV and movies, others attempted homework and Haley Bomboy, Kelsey Millman and Leann (Stiver) happily enjoyed some dessert from room service.
After a long night's rest, we woke up and were excited for game day! After yet another meal, and our walk-thru, we headed over to the field. The game was another battle, but despite all of our preparations, the tides didn't turn our way and we lost in a double-overtime heartbreaker.
Although we were disappointed with the outcome, once we arrived back in Syracuse, we changed our gears to focus on Villanova and their different playing surface (field turf as opposed to the usual artificial turf). While we will be in Philadelphia on Friday, we will be back in Syracuse for Sunday's Senior Day! It is still pretty surreal to the four of us.
While it will be our last regular season home game, we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play on our home turf again as we host the BIG EAST Championship. If all goes well, we hope to be a host site for the NCAA Tournament first and second rounds.
Finally, as much as I love writing this blog every week, as the season comes to a close- only two guaranteed and four potential weeks remaining- I wanted to give the opportunity for some of my teammates to share their voice and memories. Each week I will talk to a class, beginning this week's blog with the newest members of the team: the freshman.
Lauren Brooks:
1. Biggest fear coming into college hockey: Not knowing what to expect!
2. Favorite memories of the season; team and individual: I loved when we went to the ropes course and I'll never forget scoring my first goal!
3. Favorite place we have played: UNC.
4. Favorite meal from a trip this season: Chicken enchiladas from the Cheesecake Factory!
5. Hardest thing to adjust to: There's a lot more school work, but the academic support has been great and have really pushed me towards success.
6. Ambitions while playing at SU: To help Syracuse win the national championship, to improve as a team, and to improve individually.
Stephanie Hussey:
1. Biggest fear coming into college hockey: Fitness, ball speed, and fulfilling the expectations set for me.
2. Favorite memories of the season: The game against Boston College- all running onto the field! Hopefully it's not the last time we all pile up on each other like that.
3. Favorite place we have played: North Carolina!!!! I love when you have thousands of people to upset who are cheering against you.
4. Favorite meal from a trip this season: The sports bar in Ohio was great!
5. Hardest thing to adjust to: For me, it's been the playing surface. Hours of practice have really helped me.
6. Ambitions while playing at SU: To win the National championship and BIG EAST championships!
Sophia Openshaw:

5. Hardest thing to adjust to: Leaving my family and friends was difficult, but the team was so supportive and it really helped me adjust.
6. Ambitions while playing at SU: To win the NCAA Championship, and BIG EAST Championships and also become an All American.
Jordan Page:

4. Favorite meal from a trip this season: Mmm…Pizza from the Cheesecake Factory.
5. Hardest thing to adjust to: The amount of work in my classes has been a big adjustment, but the academics support has been a big help.
6. Ambitions while playing at SU: Winning a national championship and becoming a better hockey player!
These four freshmen have had such an immediate impact on this program. I am so happy I have had the opportunity to be on a team with them, but most importantly get to know them as individuals. Despite any fears they had coming into the season, they have put everything aside and compete daily. I can't wait to see what they achieve during their hockey careers. They all have big dreams and can accomplish big things! And who knows… maybe they can win the Water Olympics some day! Go 'Cuse!
