WASHINGTON, D.C. – Syracuse ended the 2011 season with a 3-1 setback to Georgetown in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 30. The Orange was making its first appearance in the conference tournament since 2005.
Syracuse ends the season with a record of 7-8-3. The seven wins are the highest total for the Orange since head coach Phil Wheddon took over the helm of the program in 2008. SU also registered six BIG EAST victories, the most since 1998 and the second-highest total in school history.
The Hoyas took the lead in the first minute of play. Camille Trujillo put a shot on goal, which was blocked by Syracuse goalkeeper Brittany Anghel. Sophomore# Kayla Afonso# couldn't control the rebound, and Daphne Corboz put the ball in the back of the net for her 10th goal of the season, giving Georgetown a 1-0 advantage. The Hoyas increased their lead in the 18th minute when the Orange turned the ball over in the midfield. Kelly D'Ambrisi gained possession of the ball and played it to Trujillo. Trujillo worked the ball into the Hoyas' offensive end and got past Anghel and put her shot in the back of the net to give GU a 2-0 lead. Junior Jenna Rickan had Syracuse's best scoring chance in the first half, but her shot from the left side just missed the right corner of the net as the Hoyas led 2-0 at halftime.
The Orange was much more dangerous in the second half. Sophomore Cecilia Borgstrom and junior Rosina Callisto each had scoring chances, but Borgstrom's shot went wide and Callisto's shot went high in the first five minutes. Georgetown earned a penalty kick in the 50th minute when the ball went off a Syracuse defender's hand in the box. Anghel stopped Ingrid Wells' penalty kick, but the ball went off Anghel and off the post back to Wells, who put her shot in goal to give the Hoyas a 3-0 lead. Syracuse continued to produce scoring opportunities, including junior Tina Romagnuolo's shot in the 57th minute, which was saved by Elizabeth Hanna.
Romagnuolo had another chance off a free kick, but Hanna was able to knock the ball over the crossbar, giving the Orange a corner kick. Callisto played the ball into the box on the corner, where sophomore Rachel Blum headed the ball into the net to cut Georgetown's lead to 3-1 in the 75th minute. That was as close as the Orange could get as the Hoyas recorded the victory and advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals.
Georgetown outshot Syracuse 11-9, but the Orange held a 6-4 advantage in the second half. The SU defense successfully defended against nine Georgetown corners, while the Orange scored on its only corner. Anghel finished with four saves, while Hanna had two for the Hoyas.
