Senior forward Heather Susek was named the 2011 BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year on Thursday night at the BIG EAST Awards Banquet, leading the way for four Orange award winners. Susek, along with Liz McInerney and Kelsey Millman were named to the All-BIG EAST First Team while senior Nicole Nelson was named an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection.
Susek, who shared the award with Louisville's Hayley Turner, battled Millman throughout the regular season for the points title, finishing with 40 (17goals, six assists). The Plains, Pa. native has 17 points in her last six games, including seven goals. She is seventh on Syracuse's all-time list with 35 goals, and was selected to participate in the NFHCA Senior Game earlier this week. Susek was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and ECAC Offensive Player of the Week once this season, while earning BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll status twice.
McInerney (Dublin, Ireland), a leader on the Syracuse defense all season, helped the Orange to a 1.07 goals against average that ranks seventh in the nation. She was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week twice this season as well as to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. On the offensive side of the field, McInerney contributed five goals and ten assists during the regular season.
Millman (Center Valley, Pa.) concluded the regular season with the team and conference lead in points (47), and was tied with Susek for the Orange and BIG EAST lead with 17 goals. She broke the school record for points in a game and tied the SU record for goals in a game earlier this season against Georgetown with four goals and two assists. This season, the Orange is 15-1 when Millman records at least one point, and she is one point away from tying Yvonne Milionis 1990 record for points in a season by a junior.
Nelson has been a stalwart on defense for the Orange during her career, earning her second straight nod to the BIG EAST Second Team. In addition to scoring one goal this season, the Telford, Pa. native helped Syracuse post seven shutouts during the regular season, tied for fifth most in the nation (0.37 shutouts/game). She was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 19 and earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll status this week.
The Orange (16-3) will take on Villanova tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium in the BIG EAST Semifinal. SU, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, went 5-1 in conference play. No. 1 seed Connecticut and No. 4 seed Louisville will play in the early game at 12:30 p.m., and the semifinal winners will square off on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Syracuse, making its 21st appearance in the BIG EAST Championship Tournament, is in search of its second straight BIG EAST Tournament title, and sixth in program history.
