SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange men's soccer signees Jordan Murrell and Skylar Thomas were teammates at Canada's January U-18 camp held in Costa Rica. Canada has re-established its U-18 program and Murrell and Thomas were among the 20 players invited to the camp, which was run by Canadian U-20 coach Valerio Gazzola.
The Canucks spent 10 days in San Jose, Costa Rica and played an exhibition match against a local club team as well two international matches against Costa Rica's U-18 squad. Murrell, a defender, and Thomas, a center back, started all three games. In the first international match on Jan. 25, Canada lost, 2-0. The team drew, 1-1, in the second match two days later.
Canada's U-18 program features players born in 1993 or later. Players currently in the program will be eligible for U-20 competitions in 2013 and Olympic/U-23 competitions in 2016.
Murrell and Thomas both received U-18 camp invitations based on their play on the Canadian club circuit. Murrell was part of the elite Toronto FC Academy and Thomas captained the Ajax Gunners.
The duo was among 12 players who committed in February to play for the Orange this fall.
