THACA, N.Y. – The 12th-ranked Syracuse University men's crew captured the Goes Trophy for the 11th time by virtue of its victory in the varsity eight race against No. 9 Cornell and No. 13 Navy today on the waters of Cayuga Lake. The Orange completed the 2,000-meter track in 5:42.2, 2.8 seconds faster than the Big Red. SU also took home the Stagg Trophy, presented to the team compiling the most overall points. It was Syracuse's sixth Stagg Trophy win.
Clifford “Tip” Goes '14 created the Goes Trophy in 1955 to honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. The trophy is presented to the winner of the annual race between the schools. Goes coxed the varsity eight which won the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in 1913. He had a life-long interest in rowing and served as chairman of the U.S. Olympic Rowing Committee.
Syracuse has won 16 of its last 19 cups, while compiling a 30-5 record in dual races dating back to 2006.
The Orange finished second in the remaining races. SU's second varsity eight crossed the finish line in 5:50.9. Navy won the race in 5:48.7. Syracuse's third varsity eight finished with a time 5:58.2, 3.0 seconds behind Cornell. The Orange freshman eight also placed second with a time of 5:54.7. Navy won the race in 5:49.7.
SU invites alumni, supporters, friends and fans to the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse in Longbranch Park on Saturday, April 23 to celebrate the dedication of SU's newest vessel, the “Joseph E. Peter IV.”
Mr. Joseph Peter has been a long time donor to the men's crew program. One of Mr. Peter's goals is to always have a racing shell in the boathouse with the name Peter on it. This new boat will be replacing the “Joseph E. Peter III,” which was totaled in last year's trailer accident. Mr. Peter and his family have also established both a scholarship endowment and a boat fund with the University.
The ceremony will take place around 9 a.m. after racing has finished. The Conlan Cup will be at stake as the Orange hosts No. 5 Boston and No. 11 Columbia beginning at 8 a.m.
