SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse ended its spring season this past Saturday with a 2-0 victory against in-state foe Colgate. The teams played three 30-minute periods at the SU Soccer Stadium in the Orange's final game of the spring season.
Sophomores Alyshca Mottershead and Tina Romagnuolo each recorded a goal in the victory against the Raiders.
“I applaud the players for sticking to the game plan and sticking to what we do in training,” Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon said. “Throughout the game, there were missed scoring opportunities. As we move forward, we have to make sure those opportunities count for us.”
The Orange started the spring season on Sunday, March 26 against the Western New York Flash of Women's Professional Soccer, which marked the first time the team had played a professional team in program history. SU then hosted Canisius, Binghamton, and Buffalo the following weekend. The three games all took place on the infield of the Vielbig Outdoor Track at the Lampe Athletics Complex. Syracuse then traveled to Albany for a tournament on Saturday, April 9.
“The players have worked hard to make significant gains,” Wheddon said. “We have a solid base as we move toward our next stage of development.”
The Orange finished the 2010 season with its most wins since 2007. Syracuse also posted its best start in BIG EAST conference play when it won its first two conference games of the year. The Orange begins the 2011 campaign at the Embassy Suites Kick Off Classic where it will face Robert Morris and Florida Gulf Coast on Aug. 19 and 21, respectively.
