SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team announced its 2010 team award winners on Wednesday, May 11. Head coach Ian McIntyre and his staff handed out eight individual honors, among them team MVP, Rookie of the Year and the Golden Boot Award.
Senior goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo earned MVP honors. Vuolo played in 16 matches and finished fourth in the BIG EAST with 79 saves. He recorded three shutouts and became the first goalie since Charlie Wilke in 1988 to register at least nine saves in three straight games, achieving the feat in consecutive games against Cornell, Pittsburgh and Canisius. In addition, Vuolo was one of 10 finalists nationwide for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. He was named to the Lowe's Senior All-American First Team.
Freshman defender Stephen Krachie was honored as the 2010 Rookie of the Year after a successful season in which he appeared in nine games with four starts. Krachie first cracked the starting lineup in SU's 1-0 victory against Northeastern at the Mayor's Cup.
The 2010 Golden Boot Award went to Nick Roydhouse. The junior led the Orange with four goals and 10 points. He ranked fourth in the BIG EAST in shots per game (3.06) and was named to the Mayor's Cup XXXV All-Tournament Team after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime against Northeastern.
Redshirt sophomore David Neumann earned the team's Most Improved Player Award. The defender was one of two players to start all 17 games for the Orange. He contributed to four shutouts as a member of the team's back four.
The 2010 Coaches' Award was presented to junior Sami Bin. The Coaches' Award recognizes an individual who “best personifies courage, desire, humility and an unselfish devotion to his teammates.” Bin did not play in any games during the 2010 regular season, but was crucial to Syracuse's 4-1-1 spring record.
The Orange Alumni Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest GPA after at least three semesters at Syracuse University. This year's recipient of the award was junior #L.J. Papaleo#. A forward, Papaleo played in 12 games and made his first start as a member of the Orange in the team's season opener against Siena.
Freshman Michael Johansson was the winner of the 2010 Freshman Academic Achievement Award, earning the highest GPA for a first-semester player. On the field, Johansson played in seven games with two starts.
Redshirt junior Christian Iordanou received the 2010 Dean Foti Award, given to the Syracuse player with the most positive influence on the team's attitude. Iordanou was also the team's nominee for the Unsung Hero 'Cuse Award.
