SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men's soccer team will play nine of its 17 regular-season matches in the friendly confines of the SU Soccer Stadium this upcoming season. Syracuse's 2011 schedule, released by head coach Ian McIntyre on Friday, May 20, includes visits by five BIG EAST opponents and four non-conference foes.
Syracuse kicks off its home schedule on Sept. 1 against Canisius. In addition to the Golden Griffins, the Orange will host Adelphi (Sept. 8), American (Sept. 11) and Binghamton (Sept. 27) in non-conference games. The Orange's remaining home matches are against BIG EAST opponents Marquette (Sept. 24), St. John's (Oct. 12), USF (Oct. 15), Cincinnati (Oct. 22) and Villanova (Oct. 26).
In addition to its nine regular-season home games, the Orange will host Monmouth (Aug. 15), Herkimer County Community College (Aug. 19) and Le Moyne (Aug. 22) in preseason exhibitions before visiting Colgate for the 2011 season opener on Aug. 27.
Besides the Raiders, the Orange takes on Siena on Sept. 4 in a non-conference road match. The team will also make an appearance in the elite Akron Tournament, hosted by the national champion Zips. Syracuse will face Cal Poly (Sept. 16) and New Mexico (Sept. 18) at Akron's Cub Cadet Field as part of the event.
Overall, three of SU's 2011 regular-season opponents (New Mexico, Louisville and USF) earned berths in last year's NCAA Championship. Louisville, the 2010 BIG EAST champion, advanced to the finals of the NCAA College Cup before losing to Akron. Monmouth, the Orange's first exhibition opponent, also received an NCAA bid last season.
Syracuse's Oct. 8 road date with the Cardinals is the highlight of the team's BIG EAST road schedule. The Orange also has conference road matches scheduled against Pittsburgh (Oct. 1) and Rutgers (Oct. 19) before concluding the regular season at DePaul on Oct. 29.
The 2011 BIG EAST Championship begins with first-round and quarterfinal matches at campus sites on Nov. 2 and Nov. 5, respectively. The conference tournament semifinals and championship match will again take place at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. The semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 11 with the championship match slated for Nov. 13.
