SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University Volleyball team opened the match against Sacred Heart on a 6-0 run and never looked back as the Orange swept the Pioneers, 3-0, (25-14, 28-26, 25-22) Friday night at the Big Orange Tournament in the Women's Building.
Senior Captain Noemie Lefebvre and sophomore Lindsay McCabe ignited the offense in the first set, combining for eight of the team's 11 kills. Defensively, Samantha Hinz tallied five of her game-high nine blocks in the first frame as SU cruised 25-14.
The second set was closely contested with Syracuse gaining a four point advantage at 13-9, before Sacred Heart would answer with an 12-6 run to take a 21-19 lead. The Orange, however, rallied with three kills from Lefebvre and two kills from Andrea Fisher before ultimately taking the set, 28-26.
Lefebvre would add another six kills in the third set to finish with a game-high 16 as the Orange finished off the Pioneers in set three 25-22. The senior was one dig shy of a double-double as she added nine digs and three blocks to her stat line.
Fisher finished with 10 kills on 20 attempts as she was the only other Orange with double figure kills. Setter Laura Homann dished out 31 assists while defensively Ashley Williams led the way with 22 digs.
“It was a solid win to start the season,” assistant coach Kelly Morrisroe said. “Our defense made a huge impact with 14 blocks and that will be a valuable asset come BIG EAST play.”
Syracuse is back in action tomorrow with two matches as SU plays Youngstown State at 12:30 p.m. and Siena at 7 p.m., both inside the Women's Building.
In the first game of the tournament, Siena rallied from two sets down to win the final three and defeat Youngstown State (20-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-12).
