SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse women's soccer team will once again be the first Orange team in action this fall when it opens the season against Robert Morris on Friday, August 19 at the Embassy Suites Kick Off Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Syracuse officially began preparations for the 2011 season when it held its first practice on Friday, August 5.
Syracuse returns six of its top seven scorers from last season, including junior Tina Romagnuolo, who earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors for the consecutive year in 2011. She tied for the team lead in both points (9) and goals (4). Romagnuolo enters her junior season tied for ninth on Syracuse's all-time goals scored list.
Sophomore Brittany Anghel made an immediate impact in her first season donning the Orange. Last season, Anghel earned BIG EAST All-Rookie Team accolades after recording 91 saves, which is the sixth-highest single-season total in school history. She also posted six shutouts on the year, which tie her for fourth on SU's single-season record list. Anghel ranked second in the BIG EAST in saves and third in saves per game (5.06).
Last season, Syracuse posted six victories, its most wins since the 2007 season. The Orange also recorded its best start in BIG EAST play. Syracuse finished in a tie for sixth place in the American Division, just two points shy of a top-five finish which would have given the Orange a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament.
