SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- This past summer the U.S. women's soccer team captured the attention of the country as it tried to reclaim the FIFA World Cup title. The team came up just short, losing to Japan in penalty kicks in the final. Junior Tina Romagnuolo got a first-hand look at that squad when she made her debut with the Canadian national team last week.
Romagnuolo played the final 10 minutes of the match between the U.S. and Canada in Portland, Ore. on Sept. 22. The game was the second of a “Celebration Series” following the 2011 World Cup. Playing against some of the top players in the world like Hope Solo, Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan was an experience Romagnuolo will never forget. One of the highlights of her appearance was drawing a foul on Wambach that resulted in a yellow card for the American forward.
“It was awesome,” Romagnuolo said. “Their speed of play, their technique and just how smart they are on the ball is at a whole different level.”
Romagnuolo was one of 22 players in the two-week camp with new head coach John Herdman. She was making her debut with the national “A” team. Previously, Romagnuolo was a member of the Canadian Under-20 national squad that competed at the World Cup in Chile in 2008.
“It was a great experience,” Romagnuolo said. “It has been my dream since I was little so I'm really glad I had the opportunity to play.”
Romagnuolo and the Orange are back on the road this weekend when they face Seton Hall on Friday at 7 p.m. and Rutgers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
