Field Hockey Hosts Weekend Set At Coyne

The fifth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team (7-2, 2-0) hosts two games this weekend at J.S. Coyne Stadium, beginning with a BIG EAST contest with Providence (2-7, 0-1) on Friday at 4 p.m. The Orange will then square off with UMass (2-7) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
SU is coming off two wins last weekend, highlighted by a 2-1 overtime victory at No. 19 Louisville on Friday. Syracuse then went on to defeat No. 17 Boston University on Sunday, 3-2.
BIG EAST SUccess
Syracuse won its fifth BIG EAST Championship tournament title on Nov. 7, 2010. The Orange defeated No. 4 seed Rutgers, 4-1, in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship and shutout No. 3 seed Connecticut, 1-0, in the championship final.
SU clinched the 2010 BIG EAST Regular-Season Championship, going 6-0 in league play, marking the third consecutive regular-season title for the Orange.
The Orange has won a BIG EAST record 15 consecutive and 18 of its last 19 BIG EAST regular-season games. SU last lost a regular-season conference game on October 18, 2008. The previous record was 12-games set by Connecticut (10/17/98-9/22/01).
Syracuse Playing The Best
The Orange has never been shy of playing the nation's best. This year is no different as Syracuse has already played the second-ranked team in the country twice in then top-ranked North Carolina and now top-ranked Old Dominion. Both of SU's losses this season came to the Tar Heels and Lady Monarchs, each decided by one goal.
Two Orange Earn BIG EAST Accolades
After scoring her first goal of the season on Sunday, junior back Iona Holloway was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. Sophomore midfielder Leonie Geyer also garnered conference honors with selection to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Last weekend, SU field hockey recorded two wins at No. 19 Louisville and against No. 17 Boston University. Holloway, who has started in all nine games this season, scored her first goal of the season to open the scoring against the Terriers. She was also part of a defense that held Louisville and BU to six and four shots, respectively. Holloway was also named the ECAC Defensive Player of the week in addition to the Synapse Sports Weekly Honor Roll.
Geyer, who is third on the team in points this season with 10, also leads the team with four assists. She scored her third goal of the season in overtime against the Cardinals.
Scouting Providence:
Providence (2-7, 0-1) enters Friday's contest having lost their previous three games, including a 4-0 result against No. 4 Connecticut last weekend.
Sophomore forward Brittany Ross leads the team in points (nine) and goals (four). Junior Kathi Weidman and senior Shannon DiStefano have been splitting games between the pipes. Weidman has a 4.42 GAA and a .619 save percentage, while DiStefano owns a 3.36 GAA and a .743 save percentage.
Scouting UMass:
UMass (2-7) will travel to Syracuse on Sunday after a three-day layoff from its 4-1 loss at No. 4 UConn on Wednesday. The Minutewomen are currently on a four- game losing streak.
Juniors Kim Young leads the team with six points while Callie Sweigart trails closely behind with five. Young, Sweigart, Nicole Cordero and Renee Suter all have two goals each this season for Massachusetts.
Defending the net for UMass is senior goalkeeper Alesha Widdall. This season, Widdall has posted a goals-against-average of 2.86 and a save percentage of .720. She has started all nine games for UMass, recording one shutout.
