CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Junior forward Kelsey Millman recorded two goals and an assist as the fifth-ranked Syracuse field hockey team overcame an early 1-0 deficit to beat No. 11 Wake Forest, 4-1, tonight at Francis E. Henry Stadium on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Junior midfielder Haley Bomboy and senior forward Heather Susek also scored for the Orange. SU improves to 2-1, while Wake Forest moves to 0-3.
“We showed a lot of character and maturity in the second half,” said fifth-year Syracuse head coach Ange Bradley. “After we adjusted to Wake Forest's defense, I thought we played a great game of hockey. It was great response to a disappointing loss.”
The Demon Deacons struck only once at the 7:23 mark of the first half. Lizzie Rae converted a penalty corner on an assisted by Anna Kozniuk.
Syracuse quickly evened the match, however, with a goal at the 15:26 mark. Like Wake's goal, it came as a result of a successful penalty corner as Millman put the ball in the cage with an assist from junior back Amy Kee. It was Millman's first goal of the season.
The Orange scored once more just prior to halftime, as junior midfield Haley Bomboy converted a tip-in from the left side off an assist from Millman at 30:54. The teams entered the break with Syracuse holding a 2-1 advantage. It was Bomboy's first career goal.
The final two goals for the Orange came late in the second half. Senior forward Heather Susek fired a shot into the cage with an assist from freshman midfielder Stephanie Hussey at 51:59, and Millman scored her second goal of the contest off a rebound with 1:48 remaining in the match. Hussey's assist was her first point of her career.
Syracuse outshot Wake Forest, 10-7, including a 6-1 edge in the second half. The Demon Deacons led the Orange in penalty corners, 4-2. Junior goal keeper Leann Stiver notched three saves in the win.
SU returns to action on Friday, September 9 at No. 6 Ohio State.
