
SU Faces Two More Top Ranked Teams

The fifth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team (2-1) travels to the state of Ohio for two contests this weekend. The Orange will face rv Ohio State (2-3) on Friday, September 9 at 2 p.m. and then battle No. 2 Old Dominion (4-0) on Saturday, September 10 at 2 p.m. Both contests will be played Buckeye Varsity Field on the campus of OSU.
The Orange is looking for its third consecutive 4-1 start.
SU has already played two top-ranked teams in No. 2 North Carolina (L, 3-2) and No. 11 Wake Forest (W, 4-1).
Series Notes vs. Ohio State
The Orange hold a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series against the Buckeyes, including a 2-1 overtime win last season in Columbus, Ohio and 3-2 overtime victory at Syracuse in the 2009 season.
Five of the six games have been decided in overtime.
During the team's first meeting with Ohio State in 2010, the Buckeyes tied the game 11 minutes into the second half off their second penalty corner of the contest. The two squads remained scoreless for the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime for the second consecutive season. Syracuse domination finally paid off as Lindsey Conrad found the back of the cage 10:17 into overtime to give Syracuse the 2-1 victory.
The Syracuse 2010 season came to an end with a 3-2 overtime loss to No. 7 Ohio State due to a penalty stroke goal after a Syracuse turnover in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Series Notes vs. Old Dominion
The Orange hold a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series against the Lady Monarchs, including a 2-1 overtime victory in 2009 and a 3-1 win in the 2010 season.
Lindsey Conrad scored with 1:23 remaining in overtime to lift Syracuse to a 2-1 victory against Old Dominion on September 11, 2009 at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Shelby Schraden had the other SU goal. Current junior back Amy Kee and Maggie Befort each recorded an assist in the contest.
The Orange won a 3-1 contest against Old Dominion on September 11, 2010 in Norfolk, Virginia. Current sophomore midfielder Leonie Geyer got Syracuse on the board first when she blasted a shot from 10 yards out. Current senior forward Heather Susek scored SU's two other goals as the Orange moved to 4-1 on the season.
Scouting Syracuse
The fifth-ranked Syracuse Orange (2-1) went 1-1 in a week where it faced two nationally ranked opponents. The Orange lost 3-2 on Sept. 2 against No. 2 and 2010 national runner-up, North Carolina before crushing No. 11 Wake Forest, 4-1, on Sept. 3.
Senior forward Heather Susek and junior forward Kelsey Millman lead the team in scoring with six points off a team-best three goals. Susek has recorded a team-high three goals, while Millman has registered two goals and a team-best two assists.
Junior goalkeeper Leann Stiver has played all 210:00 minutes in the cage. She owns a 1.33 goals-against-average and a .818 saves percentage.
Senior midfielder Martina Loncarica returns for her final year ranked first on SU's all-time assists list with 56. The three-time All-American is also second on the all-time points list with 118 (two points shy of tying for the top spot).
Loncarica was named the BIG EAST Offensive Preseason Player of the Year. She is joined on the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team by sophomore back Laura Hahnefeldt, Susek and junior back Amy Kee. Loncarica, Hahnefeldt and Susek were all unanimous selections.
Seven different players have scored goals this season for the Orange. Seven different players have also tallied at least one assist for SU.
Scoring for the First Time
Junior midfielder Haley Bomboy and freshman midfielder Stephanie Hussey both recorded their first career points in Syracuse's 4-1 victory at No. 11 Wake Forest on Sept. 3.
Bomboy converted her first career goal off a tip-in from the left side off an assist from junior forward Kelsey Millman at 30:54.
Hussey's first career assist was a result of senior forward Heather Susek firing a shot into the cage after taking a Hussey pass at 51:59.
Susek & McInerney Earn BIG EAST Honors
Seniors Heather Susek and Liz McInerney were both named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for their performances against No. 2 North Carolina and No. 11 Wake Forest. The honor is Susek's first and McInerney's second of the season McInerney was also named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 29.
Susek scored a goal in each of Syracuse's two games last weekend.
McInerney was at the front of the Syracuse defense in its two contests last weekend. The midfielder also scored SU's second goal of the day. Sophomore back Laura Hahnefeldt sent a ball to the right-side of the cage and McInerney directed it in for a two-goal lead that the Orange would carry into halftime.
Scouting Ohio State
The Ohio State Buckeyes (2-3) enter Friday's contest having won their last two games after opening the season with three consecutive losses.
Junior Berta Queralt, a two-time All-American, is now one point shy of hitting the 100-point milestone to become just the ninth Buckeye in OSU history to claim the three-figure mark. She leads the team with six points on a team-best three goals.
Three different players have recorded a team-high one assist.
Senior goalkeeper Ally Tunitis has played all 394:39 in cage. She owns a 1.60 goals-against-average and a .667 saves percentage.
Ohio State went 18-5 last season, earned a share of the Big Ten regular season championship and made its first NCAA semifinals appearance.
Queralt, sophomore Paula Pastor-Pitarque and senior Jenn Sciulli were all named to the 2011 Big Ten Watch List.
Scouting Old Dominion
The second-ranked Old Dominion Lady Monarchs are off to an impressive 4-0 start. ODU has defeated No. 8 Penn State (5-2), No. 10 American (4-1), No. 1 Maryland (4-0) and No. 3 Virginia (4-1) in its first four games.
Senior Emma Batten leads the team in scoring with 13 points off a team-high six goals and one assist. Junior Kelsey Smither and senior Rebecca Condie have both dished out a team-best three assists.
Senior goalkeeper Devon Seifert has played all 280:00 in cage. She owns a 1.29 goals-against-average and a .667 saves percentage.
Old Dominion boasts three of the 11 players selected to the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Field Hockey Team, the league announced today.
Senior Kathryn Kirk, junior Maartje van Rijswijk and sophomore Kati Nearhouse were all selected to the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Team.
Last Time Out
Syracuse went 1-1 last weekend, losing 3-2 at No. 2 North Carolina and winning at No. 11 Wake Forest.
The Orange surrendered a 2-0 halftime lead at North Carolina. Senior forward Heather Susek and senior midfielder Liz McInerney both scored for the Orange, but the Tar Heels scored three times in the game's final 20:24. Junior goalkeeper Leann Stiver recorded a career-best 14 saves in the effort.
Junior forward Kelsey Millman recorded two goals and an assist as Syracuse overcame an early 1-0 deficit to beat Wake Forest, 4-1, at Francis E. Henry Stadium on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Junior midfielder Haley Bomboy and Susek also scored for the Orange.
