PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Syracuse men's soccer team will play its second BIG EAST match of the season when it faces Pittsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
SU enters the game with an overall record of 2-6-0 and a mark of 0-1-0 in conference play. The Orange lost 2-1 to Binghamton on Sept. 27 in its last non-conference game of the regular season. Pittsburgh has a record of 2-6-1 and lost its only match in BIG EAST action. On Sept. 23, the Panthers lost to Rutgers in their conference opener.
SUMMERS SCORES FIRST ON THE HILL
Senior Dan Summers scored the first goal of his Syracuse career in the final minutes against Binghamton. Summers' tally was assisted by junior Lars Muller and freshman Nick Perea.
Through eight games, Summers is tied for sixth in the BIG EAST in shots with 26 on the year.
The Banstead, England native is playing in his first season for the Orange after spending three seasons at Hartwick College. Summers has started all eight games this season, recording one goal and two assists. His two assists are currently tied for tops on the squad.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
For the second time in 2011, a member of the Orange will play against one of their brothers. On Saturday, SU junior midfielder Mark Brode will take the field against his brother, Pittsburgh senior midfielder Ryan Brode. Both players have started every match this season for their respective teams. Mark recorded his first goal of the year in SU's BIG EAST opener against Marquette. Ryan is one of the Panthers' co-captains for 2011.
The Brodes hail from Setauket, N.Y. where they attended different high schools. Mark competed for Ward Melville, while Ryan played for St. John the Baptist.
Earlier this season when Syracuse played American, freshman Chris Makowski was pitted against his brother, Eagles senior goalkeeper Matt Makowski.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Pittsburgh is 2-6-1 overall and 0-1-0 in BIG EAST play. This past Friday, the Panthers opened conference play with a 3-1 loss at Rutgers. Freshman Manny Morgado recorded his first career goal in the loss. Sophomore Matt Aberegg made three saves for the Panthers in goal.
Sophomore Nino Wrobel leads the team in scoring with 10 points (five goals) on the season. Wrobel is currently tied for third in the BIG EAST in goals. The Panthers have a goalkeeper by committee, utilizing four keepers this year. Freshman Lee Johnston has played the most of any of the goalies, appearing in five games. Johnston has 17 saves and holds a 0.73 goals-against average.
Joe Luxbacher has been the head coach of Pittsburgh since 1984. Prior to Pittsburgh, Luxbacher coached at Mount Union in Ohio. Luxbacher holds a 227-233-59 overall record.
THE SERIES AGAINST PITTSBURGH
Saturday's game is the 18th between Pittsburgh and Syracuse. The all-time series is currently tied at 7-7-3.
The Orange and Panthers have been constant foes since the inception of the BIG EAST Conference. Their first meeting came in the 1985 BIG EAST Tournament. SU came away with 2-0 victory in that match en route to its second BIG EAST title in four years.
Last season, the two teams played to a scoreless draw at the SU Soccer Stadium. Orange goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo matched his career best with nine saves in the contest.
