PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh (3-6-1, 1-1-0) scored four minutes into the second overtime session to hand Syracuse (2-7-0, 0-2-0) a 2-1 loss on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Senior Ryan Brode scored the game-winning goal for the Panthers.
In the first 45 minutes of play neither team tallied a goal. Syracuse generated the most offensive opportunities, outshooting the Panthers, 5-4. The Orange put three shots on goal to none for Pittsburgh.
The Orange finally broke through for the game's first goal early in the second half. In the 47th minute, junior Louis Clark fired a shot past Pittsburgh goalkeeper Lee Johnston to give the Orange a 1-0 lead. Junior Ted Cribley was credited with an assist on the goal.
SU's lead didn't last long as Pittsburgh wasted little time equalizing the match. Only five minutes after Clark's strike, Panther freshman Chu Chu Onyeukwu scored on a one-on-one with SU senior goalkeeper Phil Boerger.
The score remained tied and for the fourth time this year the Orange headed into overtime. Syracuse had two great chances to win the game in the first extra session. In the 93rd minute, Cribley registered a shot on goal, and one minute later, senior Nick Roydhouse was turned away by Johnston.
After a scoreless 10 minutes, the match proceeded to the second overtime where Ryan Brode, the brother of SU junior Mark Brode, headed in a cross from sophomore Ryan McKenzie to give the Panthers the victory.
Boerger finished the match with two saves, while Johnston recorded six saves for the Panthers.
Syracuse travels to Louisville for its next match on Saturday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Cardinal Park.
Match Notes: Junior Nick Bibbs started his first game of the season Saturday against Pittsburgh ... Clark is tied for the team lead with two goals on the season ... Cribley leads the Orange with three assists ... Through nine games, the Orange has scored 11 goals, one more than its 2010 season total.
