SYRACUSE, N.Y. – SUathletics.com recently caught up with Syracuse men's soccer head coach Ian McIntyre to talk about this past weekend's winter college prep camp. Forty-eight talented youth players and eight goalkeepers were put through their paces by the Syracuse University men's soccer staff at the Manley Field House.
“It was a fantastic couple of days and a great opportunity for us to work with some exciting young soccer players,” said McIntyre. “Our goal was to expose these young athletes to a competitive, collegiate training environment and highlight the demands placed upon our SU student-athletes both on and off the soccer field.”
Friday evening's session started with a group warm-up and progressed into a technical rotation conducted by McIntyre, assistant coach Jukka Masalin and strength coach Dan Pribula. The goalkeepers worked individually with assistant coach Mike Miller and SU goalkeeper Andrew Coughlin before joining the main group. The intensity of the training session was excellent and a competitive 4-on-4 tournament ended the evening.
On Saturday morning, the players returned to Manley Field House and Coach Jeff Oliver of Hobart College conducted a training session that focused on ball movement and angles of support. In addition, Miller spoke to the players and their parents about the collegiate recruiting process. Pribula also introduced the campers to the work that he does with SU student-athletes and spoke about the necessity of each athlete being fully prepared for the demands of the modern college game.
After lunch, McIntyre and Masalin worked on final third play and were happy with the quality of finishing on display throughout each exercise. After the session, many of the campers took advantage of their free time and cheered on the top-ranked SU men's basketball team against Marquette in the Carrier Dome.
The evening session was comprised of 7-on-7 games in Manley Field House, and once again the coaches were pleased with the quality and commitment of all the campers.
On Sunday morning, Bill Boyle of Colgate University was the guest coach and worked on attacking creativity through 1-on-1s, 2-on-2s, and 3-on-3s to goal. In conjunction, McIntyre conducted a “chalkboard session” during which he walked the campers through how the SU coaching staff specifically prepares their team for BIG EAST competition. The interactive presentation was also an opportunity for players and parents to ask questions about expectations and demands placed upon a student-athlete competing at the Division I level.
The weekend culminated with a 7-on-7 European Championship with six teams competing for camp bragging rights. Germany was eventually crowned champions after defeating Portugal in a tightly contested final.
“We had a lot of fun with this group,” said McIntyre. “We take tremendous pride in our SU camp experience and we work very hard to try and create a fun, challenging environment for our campers. Over the past 18 months we have been fortunate to work with some exceptional soccer talent in our various camps here on campus. Our campers have gone on to play or will play at prestigious programs such as Syracuse, Akron, Boston College, Harvard, Colgate, Michigan State, James Madison, NIU, Florida Gulf Coast, RIT, Ohio Wesleyan and Le Moyne, to name a few. Four of those players have gone on to represent their national program during this calendar year and one of our former campers competed in last year's U-17 World Cup in Mexico.”
