FULLERTON, Calif. – Syracuse junior Alyscha Mottershead has been named to the Canadian women's soccer national team for the 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament later this month in Vancouver.
“It's a huge honor to be part of something so big,” Mottershead said. “It's been my dream for a long time so it's exciting for it to come true.”
Mottershead earned a spot on the roster after taking part in the national team camp held this week in Fullerton, Calif. Previously, she took part in national team camps in November and December. Mottershead has played in both of Team Canada's exhibition games against Los Al Vikings SC. In the December matchup, Mottershead played for one half. She played 30 minutes in this week's contest.
The Olympic Qualifying Tournament takes place Jan. 19-29. The top two teams from the eight-team, 15-match tournament will qualify for the 2012 Olympics in London. Canada is in Group A along with Costa Rica, Cuba and Haiti. Group B features the United States, Mexico, Guatemala and Dominican Republic.
Mottershead, a midfielder, played in every game for Syracuse in 2011 and recorded two assists. She also helped the Orange defense post seven shutouts. Syracuse won seven games this season and advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2005.
