SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 1 Syracuse (19-0, 6-0) tied its best start in school history with a 78-55 victory against Providence (12-7, 1-5) on Saturday night at the Carrier Dome.
The top-ranked Orange has matched the 19-0 start set by the 1999-00 squad with its second win against the Friars in 10 days.
Scoop Jardine was one assists shy of his second double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points and a game-high nine assists. In two games against the Friars this season, Jardine has tallied 20 assists. Kris Joseph had a team-high 13 points, while Dion Waiters and Mookie Jones had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
With the score 17-16 in favor of the Orange, Syracuse broke the game open with a 15-0 run, taking a 32-16 advantage with 2:04 remaining in the opening frame. During the run, the Orange held the Friars' without a field goal for a 10-minute stretch, and turned Providence over on seven straight possessions.
Syracuse outscored Providence 21-5 to end the first half. The Friars committed 16 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes and shot 7-of-22 from the floor (31 percent).
The Orange opened the second half by scoring the first seven points and quickly put the game out of reach. Its largest lead of the game would reach 30 at 62-32 with 8:02 remaining.
The Friars chipped into the Syracuse lead, but would get no closer than 16 points (67-51). SU shot 47 percent in the second half (16-of-34), and was 44 percent for the game (30-of-69).
The Orange forced 22 Providence turnovers and converted those into 25 points. SU held a 38-18 advantage of points in the paint, and its bench outscored the Friars 41-6.
PC had three players reach double-digits, led by Kadeem Batts with 13 points, followed by Ladontae Henton with 12 and Gerard Coleman with 11. Henton also added 10 rebounds.
