SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Orange women's basketball team (12-6, 1-3 BIG EAST) heads to the nation's capital this weekend to take on conference rival and No. 18/17 Georgetown (13-4, 2-2) on Sunday at noon on ESPNU.
• The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU with Ann Marie Anderson and Brooke Weisbrod calling the action. The contest can be heard live on SU's flagship station ESPN 97.7 FM/1200 AM and on Orange All-Access with Brian Higgins '04 on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on Syracuse's student station, WJPZ 89.1 FM. Live statistics are also available on SUAthletics.com.
SERIES HISTORY
• This will be the 54th meeting all-time between Syracuse and Georgetown with the Hoyas holding a 29-24 edge in the series.
• The Hoyas have won the last five games, including the 2010-11 regular season game in Washington, D.C. (80-62) and in the BIG EAST Tournament (61-60).
• The Orange is 10-14 playing at Georgetown, as opposed to 13-10 at home.
• On March 5, 2011 at the XL Center in Hartford, the Orange led by six with seven minutes to go, but a late Hoyas charge downed SU in the second round of the BIG EAST Championship, 61-60. Elashier Hall led Syracuse with 16 points, Iasia Hemingway scored 14, and Kayla Alexander added 11. Sugar Rodgers led the No. 15 Hoyas with 18 points and Rubylee Wright had 11.
• Two months earlier, on Jan. 4, No. 23 SU fell at No. 15 Georgetown, 80-62, despite having four players in double figures. Hall led the way with 16, while Alexander added 14, Erica Morrow had 13 and Hemingway had 10.
• SU's last win in the series was Feb. 26, 2008, 68-67, at the Carrier Dome. Its last win at Georgetown was on Feb. 17, 2007, 65-58.
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
• The Hoyas are 13-4 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST. They are ranked No. 18 in this week's AP poll and No. 17 in the coaches poll.
• Georgetown had an 11-game winning streak until losing two of its last three. It fell to No. 20/18 DePaul, 59-50, on Jan. 3, and after winning at USF, 66-56, on Jan. 7, the Hoyas fell at home to No. 1 Notre Dame, 80-60, on Tuesday.
• SU and Georgetown have two common opponents, Coppin State and Pittsburgh. The Orange beat Coppin State by six (56-50) while the Hoyas won by 16 (70-54). Both teams won big over Pitt, SU by 23 (83-60) and Georgetown by 28 (82-54).
• Sugar Rodgers leads the Hoyas in scoring at 19.7 points per game and his 46 3-pointers (31 percent). In the post, Tia Magee is averaging 11.3 points and 7.1 rebounds.
• Terri Williams-Flournoy is in her eighth season as head coach. She led the Hoyas to a 24-11 record and Sweet Sixteen appearance last season.
LAST TIME OUT
• Trailing by as many as 17 in the second half, Syracuse cut the deficit to four with 6:26 remaining in regulation, but could not complete the comeback as rv/rv St. John's (10-6, 3-1) defeated the Orange, 70-58, on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome. Kayla Alexander led all scorers with 22 points (21 in the second half).
• Despite its lowest first half shooting performance (22%) and point total (18) of the season, Syracuse responded by going 16-of-33 (49%) in the second half to spark a comeback.
• Four players scored in double-figures for the Red Storm, led by Shenneika Smith's 17 points.
• La'Shay Taft had nine points for SU, while Iasia Hemingway added seven points and eight boards.
HEMINGWAY HONORED BY CONFERENCE
• For the second week in a row, senior forward Iasia Hemingway was named to the BIG EAST's Women's Basketball Honor Roll for her performances last week for the Orange.
• Hemingway averaged 23.5 points and 7.0 rebounds as the Orange went 1-1 in a pair of conference road games last week. She led SU in scoring in both games.
• She poured in a career-high 33 points and grabbed eight boards in SU's 83-60 victory at Pittsburgh on Saturday. Hemingway went 15-of-16 at the line, setting the Syracuse school record and the Peterson Events Center facility record for free throws made.
• Hemingway received the same honor the previous week after averaging 23.5 points in a pair of 51-point victories at home vs. Niagara and Colgate.
DOMINATING THE GLASS
• Dominant rebounding has become the norm for the Orange in recent years. As of the last NCAA stats update on Monday, Syracuse led the NCAA in rebounding, averaging 49.9 per game and ranked seventh in margin at +13.1 per game.
• In the BIG EAST, SU leads the conference in rebounds per game (49.5), offensive rebounds (21.7), defensive rebounds (27.8) and rebounding margin (+12.8) this season.
• SU has four of the top 20 rebounders in the BIG EAST (6. Carmen Tyson-Thomas, 8.0; 9. Kayla Alexander, 7.7; 16. Iasia Hemingway, 7.1; and 19. Shakeya Leary, 6.6.
• Syracuse led the NCAA in rebounding margin last season at +13.4 per game. SU outrebounded 31 of its 35 opponents.
STRONG AT THE STRIPE
• An aggressive, attacking style of offense results in the Orange leading the NCAA in free throws made (336) and attempted (441).
• Syracuse leads the BIG EAST in free throw shooting percentage at .758.
• Carmen Tyson-Thomas has the best percentage at the charity stripe in the conference (.911).
• On Jan. 7 at Pitt, The Orange went 34-of-38 (.895) at the line, including Iasia Hemingway setting a school record with 15 free throws in 16 attempts.
ALEXANDER CONTROLS THE POST
• Junior center Kayla Alexander is the Orange's second-leading scorer (15.5 ppg.) and rebounder (7.7 rpg.) this season. She ranks ninth in the BIG EAST in both categories, while leading the conference in blocked shots (47 total, 2.6 per game).
• Alexander is fourth on Syracuse's career blocked shot list with 208. Chris Palombi (1981-84) ranks third with 217.
• Alexander scored a career-high 33 points against Binghamton on Nov. 26, giving her 1,008 points in her career. She becomes the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 points in her career and the first since Erica Morrow accomplished the feat in 2009-10.
• Alexander was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for her performance in Syracuse's first three games of the season. She averaged 18.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in the three contests.
• Alexander is fourth on SU's career free throws made list at 335. Next up is Julie McBride (2001-04) with 348.
HEMINGWAY SPARKS ORANGE
• Senior Iasia Hemingway has reached double figures in scoring in 14 of 18 games this season and reached the 30-point mark three times. She leads the team in scoring (16.1 ppg), ranking seventh in the BIG EAST, and averages 7.1 rebounds.
• She scored a career-high 33 points, including a school-record 15 free throws in 16 attempts, in a win at Pitt (1/7).
• She set a then-career-high with 31 points to go along with 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season vs. Colgate on Dec. 31.
• Hemingway played the first two years of her career at Georgia Tech before transfering to SU. She has scored 1,360 points in her career, 735 of them wearing Orange.
TYSON-THOMAS MAKES IMPACT
• Junior Carmen Tyson-Thomas ranks third on the team in scoring (11.9 ppg.) and leads the club in rebounding (8.0 rpg) this season.
• She had a streak of three-straight double-doubles (12/29, 12/31, 1/3) and had scored in double figures in five-straight. She has five double-doubles on the season and 14 in her career.
• The versatile swing-player has set career-highs in scoring in twice this season. Tyson-Thomas scored a career-high 21 points in SU's win against Lafayette. She improved on that performance in Syracuse's win against Buffalo, scoring a team-high 23 points. Since then she has posted 22 points against Ohio (12/20).
• She leads the BIG EAST in free throw shooting percentage at .911 (41-45), ranks third in offensive rebounds per game (3.7), and sixth in total rebounds per game (8.0).
HALL DISPLAYS ALL-AROUND GAME
• Do-everything junior Elashier Hall has shown her veratility in Syracuse's first 18 contests of the season. Hall is nearly averaging double-figure scoring at 8.7 points per game to go along with 5.2 rebounds per contest, all while leading the team with 54 assists and is tied for the lead on the squad in steals (32).
• Hall led the Orange with 19 points against Oklahoma (12/19), going 11-of-13 from the free throw line.
UP NEXT
• The Orange does not have a midweek game this week. SU will return to action on Sunday when it heads to Seton Hall for a 2 p.m. BIG EAST game.
