MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – Syracuse wrapped up the road portion of its regular season schedule with a 2-0 setback at No. 22/15 Marquette on Sunday, Oct. 14. The Orange goes to 8-6-2 overall, 5-3-1 in BIG EAST play. The Golden Eagles improve to 12-2-2, including an 8-0-1 mark in conference action.
Marquette clinched the BIG EAST's American Division title with the victory. Syracuse has also earned a spot in the conference tournament for the second consecutive year and has a bye to the quarterfinals. It marks the first time SU has played in the postseason in two consecutive seasons since 1999 and 2000.
"We had a disappointing weekend, but moving forward, we're guaranteed two more games," said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. "Playing a team like Marquette sets us up for success. We have to learn from the experience."
Junior goalkeeper Brittany Anghel tied her career high with 10 saves against the Golden Eagles. She now has 217 career saves, which rank third on Syracuse's all-time record list.
Marquette applied offensive pressure early, earning two corner kicks in the first three minutes of play. The Golden Eagles took the lead on their second corner kick at the 2:37 mark. Maegan Kelly served the ball into the box, where Rachel Brown found the back of the net on a header for her first goal of the season. The Orange had a goal disallowed due to offsides and trailed at the half.
"The playing conditions were really difficult for both teams" Wheddon said due to the steady rain and strong wind. "It was a tale of two halves. They scored in the first couple of minutes off a corner where we had poor marking in the box and gave them an uncontested header. They had the wind at their backs and played a direct style. We didn't do a good job marking their secondary runs from the midfield."
Syracuse's offense was more dangerous in the second half. The Orange manufactured six shots and earned a corner kick, but couldn't take advantage of its opportunities while Marquette scored an insurance tally in the 57th minute. Lisa Philbin's initial shot was stopped by Anghel, who couldn't control the ball. Taylor Madigan collected the rebound and scored.
"We created good opportunities in the second half," Wheddon said. "Their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves. Their goal came on a break after we had the ball in our offensive end for 5 to 10 minutes and were controlling the pace of the game. Brittany stopped the initial shot. Under those conditions, you have to follow up on the rebounds and they got to the ball first."
The Golden Eagles outshot the Orange, 18-8, and had nine corner kicks to one for SU. Amanda Engel finished with two saves for Marquette.
Syracuse closes out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 4:30 against St. John's at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange's senior class will be honored in a pregame ceremony. There is no admission charge.
