Region Players of the Year
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â Syracuse field hockey's Laura Hahnefeldt was named Longstreth/NFHCA Mideast Region Player of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) on Monday. The Orange junior back is one of just five players nationally to earn Region Player of the Year honors.
Â
Hahnefeldt helped lead head coach Ange Bradley's Orange to a No. 1 ranking in the NFHCA poll for three straight weeks, a BIG EAST regular season title and the program's second-ever Final Four appearance.
Â
The native of Hamburg, Germany was also named Longstreth/NFHCA All-Mideast Region First Team, All-BIG EAST First Team and BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. It was her third straight All-Region selection and second All-BIG EAST nod.
Â
Hahnefeldt was one of the leaders of a Syracuse defensive unit that led the nation in goals against average throughout most of the season. Forcing numerous turnovers and making many key tackles in the SU backfield, Hahnefeldt was also a critical member of the Orange's offensive and defensive penalty corner units. Heading into the Final Four, Syracuse ranked third in the country in goals against average (1.14) and tied for the NCAA lead in shutouts with eight.
Â
Hahnefeldt became a key contributor at the offensive end as well late in the season, scoring three goals in the BIG EAST Tournament. She finished the season with 11 points on four goals and three assists.
