SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Three members of the Syracuse women's soccer team have been voted to the Capital One Academic All-District team announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Senior Alyscha Mottershead and juniors Brittany Anghel and Rachel Blum were named to the 15-member squad. Syracuse was one of two schools to have three all-district selections.
The trio will now go on the national ballot for Academic All-Americans. That list will be released on Thursday, November 29.
Anghel earned the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year award and was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team in 2012. She posted a 1.02 goals-against average and a .784 save percentage. Anghel posted five shutouts, increasing her career total to 18. She now ranks second on Syracuse's all-time career list, just two behind Eliza Bennett-Hattan's 20 from 2006-09. Anghel is a two-time member of the Dean's List and BIG EAST All-Academic Team. In addition, she has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in every semester.
Mottershead was voted to the All-BIG EAST Second Team after recording career highs in points (12) and goals (5) this season. She led the squad in both categories. Mottershead had three game-winning goals, which tie her for fifth in the BIG EAST. She has been named to the Dean's List three times and to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team twice. Mottershead is a four-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
Blum started all 18 games on defense in 2012. She helped Syracuse to five shutouts this season and a 0.87 goals-against average in BIG EAST play. Blum has been named to the Dean's List and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester and is a two-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs. The nominee must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in both undergraduate and graduate work. He/she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
